Drove up the coast last weekend and stopped to take some pictures before the sun set. What can I do to make the picture pop more? Tips?

Was taken with a rebel xt and kit lens.

heres my take of the first one. it was hard cuz of the noise on the car doors. but fun to try. what i did was adjust layers, then layer back in the original background. then sharpened it a bit with high pass filter. then some burning and dodging to try get some contrast.

didnt take too long but would have been easier to reshoot using some flash next time.

I think if you merge both photos (slightly subdued sky by howsitboy, and nice looking car by Beau), you should end up with a real nice looking photo.

Shooting with Flash here could be tricky, tons of reflective surfaces at close range. Doable though...

Howzitboy and Beau..I've got to say I'm very impressed. If I shot in similiar settings next time, what should I change? Would a flash be more of a hinderance?

Here is what I would do.

  1. Shoot in RAW. You have far more post-production options.
  2. Try using a reflector or two. Try and bounce what sun is left on to the car. I use a couple of cheep accordion reflective auto-shades for such work. If that does not work ...
  3. ... use an off camera flash, but one with a diffuser. Without it, your light will be far too harsh. From what I have heard from a gal who uses it, the Demb Flash Diffuser (external link) is really quite wonderful.
Good luck!

Nice work and Im gonna have to remember that trick. I have some photos that would really benefit from that.
