Just a quick Q: can you get EOS RemoteCap to work with the 1D2 using USB or do you need Firewire for that as well? (I am aware PFn's can only be changed by Firewire)

I'm kinda grateful my old Dell D400 has an onboard Firewire port (big surprise - my D600 did not), but I need a new cable (6-pin to 4-pin).

My desktop has Firewire, so no problem.

That is wierd that this camera needs firewire and my "newer" 20D (newer by about 5 months) uses USB.

FireWire, in many ways is better technology. Originally developed by Apple Computers, and known as iLink (or IEEE1394), the original FireWire (400) was a LOT faster than USB 1/1.1. It's now an ISO standard, with RFCs etc. USB struck back with USB 2, and FireWire struck back with FW800, and FireWire is still the fast of the two, albeit not by that much. More information on the links below:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FireWire (external link)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB (external link)

1D series cameras have traditionally used FireWire, for a variety of reasons.

1. It's faster.
2. USB 2 was not a ratified standard when the EOS 1D was released. Canon was not prepared to use a non ratified non ISO standard. I'm pretty sure all of the 1 series cameras using FireWire (400). There is an official Canon interview somewhere where this is explained...

FireWire hasn't taken off because Apple is not as big as Intel (who invented USB).

I just picked up a cheapo $12 firewire PCI card that has a 6-4 pin cable included.. surprise!!!... hooked it up and worked great. :)

The cable alone is selling for $20 at Fry's ???

Hi guys, I'm a bit late on this one but I had the same problem with trying to set the user name on my 1D mk II, but as you've already said the firewire card allows you to do this, but can the firewire card be used for downloading images from the camera ?, if so what software is needed.

Thanks

Alan

I tried this at my brothers on his computer. All you need is Canon Utility on your computer and you can save them to your computer from your memory card when the camera is hooked up. It is pretty easy, about the same ease as taking out a CF card and placing it in a card reader.

I gotta say, the 1D MKII is so different then the 20D, except for its 8mp sized sensor, that seems to still be better then the 20Ds. Anyways, the more I use this camera the more I see where my money went for it. Yeah ok, so I ended up paying around $2500 for it, but man, this thing is better then 2 30Ds easily. Not saying though that the APS-C cameras are bad, they're great and awesome, just its like going from a Honda Civic to a Ferrari!

congrats Chris you will love it but be patient there is a learning curve.
I use these custom functions:
#4 -1 star button for focus
#8 -1 LCD display ISO/remain shots
#18 -2 the WB or button beside the star button (switch to registered AF point)
I use the centre point for this one and set the "star"button to what ever I want that way you can switch back and forth.

These are just a few to play with so give it a try, if things seem screwy just reset to default.
Have fun. :)

Chris, now you're REALLY pushing it hahaha :D.. Are you trying to make the 20/30D crowd to run out and get the MKII (N) ? ;)

I'll put like slightly less, as from a Civic to a nice 5 Series

Those are exactly what I have on mine now too, except * as center and x as AFPS. I also have 17-1 on.

you need to use firewire (which has already been covered in the above posts) and even then the camera can be a bit finnicky and not want to connect. just try it a couple times and it should be juuust fine.
