I'm trying to write an action/script that will do this... anyone know if it's possible without having to learn PS scripting? I think it's JavaScript based which i'm not fond of.

What I want is:
- Open a PSD file. The file will be layered, with a white background layer, have between 1 and 20 layers with images on them, and will likely have adjustment layers.
- Turn the layer background black.
- Apply a layer style (grey stroke 5px say) to every layer with an image on it. This has to exclude the background layer and adjustment layers.

Anyone have any ideas?

Besides excluding the adjustment layers, you can do this with an action, but I can't immediately think of a way of excluding the adjustment layers - but that shouldn't matter if they aren't masked, correct?

Try this:
First save your layer style in the styles palette - one off task
Open file
Start recording
Select layer 'Background'
Edit > Fill with Black
Select > Select All Layers (does everything except Background)
Styles Palette > Apply Style

Other than that, you're going to have to get involved with scripting and looping through layers. This Photoshop Commander Script by Andrew Hall would probably minimize the amount of work involved http://www.ps-scripts.com …2e414d3faed28f6d2fbf557aa (external link), or get in touch with me off-forum and we'll sort something out.

Victoria, you're a genius! The hardest part was working out how to save a style, but google helped me. Thanks! :) :D
