Thanks tony, good to hear reassuring words. I sold my 50d and a ton of random possessions to get it. Hoping this and my 5d will cover pretty much everything.

Think I got in at a good price point too. I was eyeballing these last year when they were around $3k-3.5k. Just couldn't do it, but they sure did tank.

This is right on the money.

Heh! Is it just me, or do these two bodies fit together like "two peas in a pod"?!

Love this camera....hate to see it going down so much in price....

LOVE to see it go down in price.

btw your statement sounds really elitist and portrays the message of "oh this camera is only for people who have the $ to buy it and everyone else shouldn't get/want one"

...I can assure you that, once you put a brand-new, virgin, fresh-smelling 1D3 out of its box, compared to another slightly scuffed body, with signs-of-use and already serviced (even if working well), anyone will notice why the new price tag, and why the "used" one.

I do not think it is about "elitism", though. Fortunately, I am seeing proportionally MORE prepared / better informed / "lower" purchasing power 2nd-hand owners than (probably) than actual original owners I can remember, though. :D

Cheers,

I was more than happy to save $4K on my used 1DsmkIII and a similar amount on my 1DmkIII over a new one - the new one isn't new for long once you start using it, just as with cars. (And yes, I've shot with more than my share of 1DmkIII bodies when new, as a bunch of mates worked for the local newspaper and I shot them every chance I got as I was a 10D/40D shooter at the time...)

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

How do you guys like your 24-105Ls?

I'm considering letting the 24-70L go in exchange for one. I always seem to want just a tad more reach on the long end and IS would be nice. Indoors 2.8 is never enough and I'm usually bouncing flash... A wide and tele prime take care of the natural light stuff...

If you can live without the DOF the 24-105L is a great lens. Extra reach plus the IS more than makes up for the one stop slower speed. It's sharp wide open and lighter than the 24-70mm.

I use it as a walk around lens and for portraits and landscapes. It's as all-purpose as you'll get.

I just picked up my 1D3 a few weeks ago to go along with my 5D. I shoot mainly weddings. I find it hard to pick up the 5D after using the 1D3. It (the 5D) just feels so clunky; plus for dimly lit indoor pictures the 1D3 has blown me away with it's ISO performance.

I used to be so happy with my 5D; then the 1D came along.... I hope this period of infatuation fades.

Heh! For me it kind of goes in cycles. The 5D is my preferred "walkaround" body because it's lighter/more compact and it does great for so many things. But the 1D3 is such a high performer, I almost always have it around ready to grab. And yeah, sometimes the 5D gets lonely, but other times the 1D3 gets lonely...

It won't. Call it magic or whatever, but I swear, the images from my Mk3 are getting better as time goes on.

I'm exactly the same way... I had been using the 1D3 a LOT, then took just the 5D with a couple of lenses with me to NYC... fell in love with the 5D all over again and got some of my favorite images ever.
