Mine is on the latest and greatest firmware and all other functions are fine.

I may have been wrong the whole time, it may actually be my flash that is the problem. All this time it has only been acting up on my 1D but just now I tried it on both cameras and it would only register in TTL mode not ETTL. If I unlock the flash from the hot shoe and wiggle it around a little bit then it seems to reconnect and stay that way.

Could it just be bad or dirty contacts on my 580? They look clean as far as I can tell...

Sure, take some alcohol to the dang contacts, and make sure you have fully charged batteries in the flash -- they do goofy things otherwise.

Well I tried the rubbing alcohol and that made it work properly on my 5D, it worked alright on the 1D as well but it was still a bit fidgety. I'll have to keep experimenting.

Check to see that the pins of your flash aren't recessed a bit and that they're "springing out" properly.

If you've got a recessed pin, it's going to interrupt communication with the flash in one way or another, so it'll appear to be a "dumb flash" to the camera.

I ran into this problem with a flash I had bought online (used), but I was able to just disassemble the unit and rework the pin to get it working again. YMMV.

I just double checked and all of the pins are working as they should. When I jiggle the flash a bit on the hotshoe and THEN lock it down it seems to stay in eTTL, if I don't do this first it gets stuck in TTL mode.

I'll figure it out eventually. I mostly only use it off camera anyways on manual so it's not that big of a deal ;) (Tempted to get those Flex TT5s though!)

Interesting effect, but I feel as if this shot would lend itself nicely to a normally exposed, regular color shot... without any of the fancy after-effects. Looks like you nailed the exposure, and the colors on this scene would really pop.

You should try to find a lens that gives you a little more isolation. What?
