Nov 13, 2011 09:22 | #4849 Anyone got any hints for settings for severe backlit scenes in sport? I've just bought a second hand mkiii and used it twice for football. Over 800 pics taken in both games many of them shooting into the sun and it bombed out. Massive over exposure. Could not cope at all with the bright setting sun. www.davidmaginnissportsphotography.zenfolio.com/

Could not cope at all with the bright setting sun. My 7D, which I've used for the last 2 years, can cope reasonably well with backlit subjects and hits the focus 9 times out of 10. At the minute I remain to be convinced that the mkiii is a better camera. For a pro-range piece of kit it is disappointing. Apart from its 10fps attribute, the auto focus is also all over the show - back and forward focussing and peripheral sensors picking up background objects but rarely the centre one which is actually the one selected. The serial number is well outside the batch affected by the original AF/mirror issues, and the body has the latest firmware updates so I'm at a loss as to whats going on. Might just send it to Canon service centre to check the callibration of the AF system, something doesn't seem to be right. Some wonderful examples on here of what it is capable off. Perhaps a wee tweak of the internals will sort out the issue. What do you have your AF settings set to in your custom functions? I'm assuming your using single point AF selection with (9 point expansion) also what do you have your body set to as far as AF speed goes? I try to use spot metering if im shooting in in AV or TV but most times I stick to M that way if the image is over exposed its my fault. Ive never noticed my body having issues with it locking focus in direct sunlight but I try to avoid that as much as possible.

Centrepoint selected with no additional points. www.davidmaginnissportsphotography.zenfolio.com/

Used spot metering yesterday and the week before and despite the centre point being on the player the subjects were underexposed against a bright backdrop. Its as if the centrepoint is not functioning accurately either as a focus point or as an exposure measure. interesting..... if you have no AF expansion set then something might be wrong cant hurt to send it into canon for a look over but it will cost you (Unless your a CPS member but even then it may cost you)

I had similar fault with my 40D when I bought it new. Sent it to the service centre and they re-set and aligned the autofocus system. It worked perfectly after that. www.davidmaginnissportsphotography.zenfolio.com/

Mine does fine under similar circumstances as you listed above. 1Ds MkIII - 1D MkIII & several lenses with red rings.

You might want to send some of those photos, too. Can you post some of your shots?
