Yeah, just send it to Canon. You might want to send some of those photos, too. Can you post some of your shots?

I've a few done with the focus points showing. I'll post them shortly.

IMO, you would make out better by starting your own "Need Help Troubleshooting" thread in Cameras...

Look carefully at the focus points of the OOF shots. In most instances the focus point is on areas that don't have enough contrast for the autofocus to function correctly. You should be aiming at the jerseys instead of the players' faces; given the distance from the players you'll still have their faces in focus and the background blurred.

You should also use the AF expansion points to help the camera focus in situations similar to that in those photos. See this document for suggestions on how to configure your autofocus: http://www.pressefotografforbundet.dk/fil/eos1dmk3_af_cfn_guide.pdf (external link)

Red Dog, it would also be helpful if you posted the the full EXIF for the photos you posted earlier. Are you shoogint with AI Servo? My suspicion is that some Custom Function isn't configured correctly.

My suggestion is that before sending the camera off to Canon go into the menus and reset all the camera settings to default and the Custom Functions to default.

All settings were reset to default. Batteries were removed for overnight clearance. Customs settings were cleared and redone using AF guides from both the 7D and sports settings recommended on this and other forums. All shot with AI servo.

I had shot last weeks match with expansion points on, both zonal and right/left side and it was no better. Exposure was all over the show as was focus - inconsistent back or front focusing.
Tracking was slowed down then tried faster and neither had any noticeable improvement.
Scratching my head with this one. Its as if the focus is not actually callibrated to the focus point selected. :(

What I do find interesting in some of your shots RD, neither the players nor the background are in focus.

It looks as if the point of focus is only a couple feet behind them in the grass.

If you've already done all of that then I send the camera in to Canon. But I wouldn't rely too much on "sports settings." Those are given by people who really understand their camera, and the 1D Mark III has a learning curve just like any other camera.

Are you using Back Button Autofocus? What lens were you using? Understand too that its more difficult to focus accurately on an object/subject moving across your field of vision than it is on an object/subject coming towards or retreating from you. The predictive AF in the AI Servo AF is predicated on a subject approaching the camera. That's why I suggest you aiming at the front of the players' shirts where there's usually lettering and contrast rather than faces.

I've tried MA on Oneshot mode but was getting some conflicting results. Sometimes it was front focusing other times back focusing which is consistent with its behaviour on AI servo.
I had a 40D which did the same thing and I sent it to Canon service centre in Glasgow. They reset and re-aligned the Autofocus system and callibrated it. Never looked back after that. It appears to me as if the re-alignment might be the issue as exposure was all over the place at tiems even though it was linked to the central focus point and spot metered.
