One other thing to bear in mind regarding where your AF point falls...

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that the actual focus spot is smaller than the box you see in your VF or in DPP. You think it should hit but the actual point may be falling between subjects.

Are you using "helpers" or just center point ?

If you've already done all of that then I send the camera in to Canon. But I wouldn't rely too much on "sports settings." Those are given by people who really understand their camera, and the 1D Mark III has a learning curve just like any other camera.

Are you using Back Button Autofocus? What lens were you using? Understand too that its more difficult to focus accurately on an object/subject moving across your field of vision than it is on an object/subject coming towards or retreating from you. The predictive AF in the AI Servo AF is predicated on a subject approaching the camera. That's why I suggest you aiming at the front of the players' shirts where there's usually lettering and contrast rather than faces.

I'm reasonably comfortable with the body and the custom functions as they're pretty much the same as the 7D with a few exceptions. I've also shot football regularly for the papers both on a national and international level for the last 2 years so I've a fair bit of experience. I tend to shoot sidelines most weeks for the local league and backline for the International games. The 7D works well for the same lenses both Sigma 120-300 and canon 300 f2.8.
When you point and shoot at something coming towards or across you you expect it to be in focus 8/10 of the pics with the 7D. I expected the Mkiii to be at least of that standard despite all the bad press about the AF in earlier editions.
The only saving grace is the 10 fps which is getting me out of a hole at the minute. I've been lucky to get 1 or 2 shots in a sequence to use for the papers, but I normally prefer to shoot only 3-4 pics at a time not 7 or 8. At this rate the shutter will be away before the 7D's has expired. :(

Used helpers last week but reverted to centre point only this week as it was no benefit. Focus was never really fixed on the subjects even with slow tracking.

Which primes would you guys suggest for the 1D3?

i only have an 85mm, 135mm, and a 70-200mm lens... i'm looking for a nice lens to take some portraits/everyday life with?

50 f/1.4?
35 f/2.0
28 f/2.8?

50 f1.4 would pair up nice with your current lens line up

I would think that the 85mm f/1.8 that you already own would be excellent for portraits with the 1D Mk III.

With the 1.3x crop factor it gives a FOV of an 110mm lens. The old Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 lens was one of the best portrait lenses EVER (on a full frame camera). So the 110mm FOV that your 85mm lens would be extremely similar.

To me the focal lengths you suggest would be too short (except maybe the 50mm lens) and would give unflattering perspective distortion for portraits. JMHO.

Photographers do it in 1/1,000th of a second...but the memory lasts forever! ;)
