My 1D IIn seemed to nail focus more consistently than my 1D III, by a pretty wide margin.

I heard that from many people, and all the press shooters next me in the games told me to rely on IIn over III, today i was happy with both cameras because III focused better today for most of the shot, and i used 135L on mkIIn instead of 70-200 2.8IS mk1 and it was a spot on killer lens, i can't wait to see the results tomorrow [now i am tired and will sleep soon], then i will judge, but i think i have to shoot more 2 games with mkIII and then i can confirm that it getting better than before, could be the settings that i may changed last time and it worked for today[yesterday] game, can't wait to shoot more again and see.

The main reasons I wanted the III over the IIn was:

14 bit
1 stop better ISO
MOAR BATTERY! (and smaller/lighter)

Other than that, I'd gladly go back to my IIn - it was pretty damn good for how old it is. I'm reluctant to get an IV since i've heard it's no better than the III with regards to focus, other than working better in florescent light.

I was having the biggest problem at a recent event - I was tasked with doing "stand and repeat" for about an hour doing pictures of people in front of a sponsor backdrop - I can't post any of the pics.... Even at f/2 and a pretty good distance, it would consistently miss focus - I manually put the point over someone's face, would not recompose, and still had problems. AF assist from my 580 was enabled but didn't seem to help. the light was tungsten lights in the room. I was getting good and pissed.

^^All with the 35L

As for spotting focus shifts - the Ec-S screen is in the mail :) With the current screen, I can't see a 3" focus shift in the viewfinder.

Here's another great example of my "poor technique"

http://www.flickr.com …5/sets/72157627679630804/ (external link)

of the maybe 600 photos I took, I think 3 had missed focus. 35L and Sigma 85 f/1.4 all day. I'm pretty picky about what's "sharp" I've seen a lot of "professional" photos I would have thrown out for being not well enough in-focus.

Well, looking at the full-size image, maybe the focus went a bit back into here hair, it's hard to tell, because, well, even viewing at 100% her face is maybe slightly soft...

So, let's get this straight -- you are saying that out of 600 shots, this is one example of three that "missed"? Hmm, one shot out of 200 that at worst is a bit off...to me, that would be "all in a day's work", having 199 out of 200 shots that nailed it and the one that was still usable...

Even the LCD is better with III, but doesn't matter, i was happy with IIn and it did the job for me for years, and i always use it in the game with III, so i will not dump this IIn until i can get IV or another III.

I am happier with the focus of the IV over the III. The IV gives me a higher keeper rate and I love the ability to crop more. The III was great too, but I just never completely trusted it.

So, I promised Tareq I wouldn't disappear and what do I do? I disappear... Thing is I returned the camera as I couldn't handle the weight (I have a condition and this was not a good fit). But, I did manage a few shots, even though there was no light to speak of...

Plus I shot the fireworks with it. On a tripod, so no problems here...

One thing I loved about the Mk iii is the larger sensor, so I'm now contemplating a 5DII. And with this I leave you again. It's been a pleasure! :)
