Did you sharpen the picture? Are you using any noise reduction?

yes and yes. I NR'd until detail was lost, then sharpened a teensy bit

Comparing the SOOC to the edited one that I posted, I see NO difference in noise - it'd be fair to assume that what you see is the noise that would come from the camera.

Other 1D III owners - does this image look to be "clean" for ISO 3200? I always feel like others are able to pull off cleaner images at high ISO than myself...

If you click it, the "original" is resized 2048 px square.

If you want my honest opinion, i really like it as it is noisy, i will not care to clean it, the noise add for that shot, maybe i won't like it large size but at this small size up to 1024px it is really a touch, some photos even taken at ISO 100 i would like to add some noise, so well done and don't change the noise.

Good to know. I tend to get paranoid about lost detail and such.

I just got a 1D III used from a great member here on POTN. Still getting used to it, since I have a 7D and was pretty used to the menus on the rear LCD, but I'm getting the hang of it.

Anyway, I braved the cold here in Rhode Island yesterday and took a ride to Bristol, just to mess around a bit. I'm not anywhere close to being a pro, but here's a shot...

Ken the pic doesn't show. If you click on it it will open in Flickr, but you must not have the proper "code" for posting it here.

Do you mean this?
I've tried this to but it does not work on my m3.

Hi,

First post here!

I got mark 3 about a week ago. Nice camera. A lot diffrent than earlier models.

I tried this wb thing and it works. First you need to press func button and then cycle to custom white balance (icon between flash symbol and kelvin wb). Then press picture style/key/mic button and you should get flashing [1] icon on the screen. Take a picture and camera says "WB data for custom WB obtained". There you have a custom wb. Nice feature.

If your picture is wrong kind: too dark (lens cap on) or wrong color, you can get pretty intresting results. So better stick with white or neutral grey targets..

Dummy me, I made a quick edit and republished. Worked in Flickr but forgot to check here. Sorry... should work now.

I'm not a landscape guy, but thought it looked pretty good...

When I hit the picture style/key/mic button, the picture style menu pops up on my LCD, I don't get a flashing 1 anywhere. Am I missing something??

Hi,

Yep, you are. You need to be in state where you can change wb with back wheel.

Hit func button first. Now you should be able to cycle through wb icons with back wheel. If you can't, then you probably can change format. No worries, press func again and now back screen should display only wb icon and you can cycle through those with back wheel. Then cycle to custom wb icon (between flash and K) and then hit picture style. You should get flashing [1] on back screen.

Funny... that night I went to the high school game I was going to, and I ran into another photographer, he shoots Nikon. So we were talking, and I brought up this white balance thing, and as I was telling him I couldn't get it to work, it did! Bad thing was, it was just as the game was ending, so I didn't have time to mess with it. I will try it tonight though, back at the same gym (bad lighting).

I was VERY surprised at how well the 1D3 was at ISO 6400. Most shots just needed a tiny bit of sharpening, if that. I'm still learning, but I'm loving the 1D3!

Here is one... there is some noise, but it's not too bad, at least for me anyway.

I think that is pretty damn good for 6400.
