After doing some testing, I may have to send my 1D3 to Canon. It's got some dodgy servo tracking, which I was afraid of but too nervous to test for.

As the second owner, I wonder if they'll still pay for shipping and repair for free... :/

Last week walking in a forest with small dogs  ..

In such situation, I am really missing some more dynamic range ... with black dogs and snow => I go quickly from underexposed (dog faces are invisible) or over exposed (snow is totally burned and contour are "solarized" )

Probably, I will move to 5DMKIII if dynamic range curve is much better.

Well just picked up a used MKIII in the UK for £1000 so will be joining the club again soon as dropping back from a 1DMKIV.

Question for all of you fellow 1D3 owners. Do any of you use the Flex NR software from PixMantra?

(...)

I have a wedding coming up at the end of the month and

(...)

Thanks in advance.

It's fully supported (especially now, after a full migration of my workstation's OS and Tools to 64bit-builds of Windows).

I have been very, very busy over the last year+, but plenty of work with FlexNR, as it is pretty much the most-powerful, best-tuned NR-tool exclusively developed for the EOS 1D MarkIII.

Here's a progression from ISO3200 all the way to ISO10000ec, all at 100%-view size (these are point-and-click results from FlexNR, absolutely NO extra-tuning of any kind performed):

Here's another sample-series, from a Wedding, in similar conditions as your expected scenario, ISO 4000ec, 5000ec and 6400:

And here's what you get with FlexNR, when the lights go TOTALLY out:

Enjoy!

EPIC IMAGE

What did you do to achieve that last image? I always wanted to do that with my 40D, but eventually gave up because of its noise @ high ISO. Thought i'd have to give that up aswell when buying a 1DIII istead of a 5DII, but that image of yours is just the kind of image i'd like to produce!

Care to explain what youve done?

Hello sir, sorry for beating a dead, or at least old horse, and I know this may not be the right thread for it, but still no Mac OS version available?

In a nutshell, I would simply call it a good deal of control of the system + capture process itself.

The camera was configured with specially-tuned, all-round PictureStyle (included in FlexNR), then manually set at (ISo3200, f/1.8, ~4-5 secs if IIRC), NO on-board noise-reduction. Optics were EF 24mm f/1.4 L II.

Contrary to common-stream practice, the image itself is an ON-BOARD .JPG, with absolutely no other-processing except a slight boost of sky-contrast in a given tonal range, and then FlexNR. The 1D MarkIII .JPG engine produces very good quality .JPGs that are friendly for post-processing, and most of the time coming out better than the actual capture.

I pretty much improvised (completely) the camera location and seating, as I never travel with additional support / tripod (not my style of photography). I placed the camera on top of my mini-bag, to gain some elevation from the ground, then tried to point it slightly upwards, trying to grab as much sky as posisble, so the Milky-way could become clearly visible... I could never see the viewfinder or the back-monitor (just being lazy).

The 5DII will not give you any significant high-ISO advantage over the 1D3, except some extra resolution and a much stronger (and destructive) on-board, DigicIV-powered .JPG noise-reduction engine.

Here's another one, hand-held, with quite little light left, but coming out pretty detailed with the 1D3+24mmII+FlexNR "night-vision" combo (ISo6400, 1/30s, f/2.0):

http://www.pbase.com …ge/141646745/original.jpg (external link)

The above image's technicals (overal tonal depth and distribution, high contrast, lights levels, natural-vs-artifical light balance, etc.) could easily push any camera to its bare-bone limits.

Cheers,

PIX
