This thread has got me seriously considering a 1DIII.

Had been planning to get a gripped 7D to replace my 20D (will keep the 50D). But after reading all the negative posts about noisy images and files that need considerable post processing to get sharp pictures, etc. I'm having serious doubts about the 7D. Maybe it's time for some 1D goodness...

really really good photos will always need considerable post processing I think. Even the best unedited photos can be made better most of the time with a little bit of intentional processing.

This thread may not make the choice clear, but it gave me the information I needed to make the right choice for me. The nice thing is that you can beat on a 1D3 for a few months, and if it's not right for you, sell it and go 7D anyway. I doubt that will be the case though...

The price difference between a used 7D and a used 1D3 is almost negligible with current prices when you throw in the cost of a Canon grip on the 7D (straight comparison with the built-in Canon grip on the 1D :)). When the 7D was announced and hit the market at $1700, the 1D was still $3K more, and now you can get them for about the same price, when considering the grip. Good value.

How long are people seeing their battery last? I got just over 3,000 images on mine last weekend, and ended up at 40% (going downhill fast at that point). I was quite happy with that, as I think this is an old battery.

Thanks, I appreciate your input. I'm not averse to doing some post processing. I have to do some on the images from my 50D to get best results.

The main reason I want to upgrade is to get into a better focusing system for motorsport, birds, wildlife and so on.

My doubts over the 7D come from reading reviews and discussion threads in forums like this one. When it came out, I recall a lot of love for the 7D, but most threads now talk about poor high ISO/low light performance, difficulty setting up the focusing system, poor exposure latitude, cluttered viewfinder.... The issues just seem to keep stacking up.

So I've turned my attention to the 1DIII or maybe 1dIV. I haven't really considered this series of bodies before as they are/were too expensive for my needs when new. But used prices are more favourable. So I'm now all ears.... :)

I bought a used battery a couple of weeks ago and ended up getting 4600 shots out of it. Ended up being at 7%. That's with review off, servo mode on, AV, IS on, 70-200 2.8L w/2X converter.
I was very impressed...

I ended up turning the review option off when I shoot soccer, basically because I don't look at the screen until halftime and after the game. I think that will help boost battery power. I rarely use live view too.

I love both the 1d and the 5d. They're definitely both amazing cameras at different things. I'm glad to be able to use either when the need arises.

Sweet! I could turn off the review, as I really don't use it for anything productive. Then again, I generally charge this battery once/month, and my 3000 shot shooting sessions are pretty limited, thank goodness. I'm running post on this last session now, and I only have 800 images to go!

Thanks. I did take a look. Lots of food for thought. Will have to weigh it up all over again.... :)

Yep, under setup menu 1 (the first yellow wrench when you hit the menu button) go to "Record func.+media/folder sel.", then highlight and select "Record func." and pick "Rec. separately". Now get out of the menus and on the back of the camera push the "func." botton under the small LCD screen and you can pick whatever file type goes to which card there.

It's on page 73-75 of the manual.
