Hello everyone, I just got a second hand 1dIII and tried a little bit. I used it for birding. Compare to 7D, my feeling is that the camera focus fast, but lacks the precise focus ability on small subject like 7D dose. So some shots go out of focus, but generally the response speed is little bit better than 7d. I have some general question on the camera setting: what kind of focus mode do you often use? one point /w/wo extension point or all the focus points? for 7D I can save the focus setting in the custom function and change the setting really quick. Can 1D3 do that? Thanks for the help.

This is a VERYYY long video, but i am so glad i watched it! Helped me understand this camera and all the custom functions so much better than i could have done with reading the manual. Sit down for an hour and watch this with camera in hand and tweak it to what suits you. I actually set my camera exactly how he did and have been changing it ever so slightly to suit my needs.

Congrats on the 1D3! I'm still new to mine, but I'm loving it.

The 1D can register three sets of C.Fn settings, and apply them quickly. You can also write them to the card, so you can maintain different profiles on different cards, then quickly load them.

Regarding focus settings, I change mine depending on what sport I'm shooting. You should read the manual, carefully, then go read this brilliant AI Servo Guide: http://cpn.canon-europe.com …o_AF_Custom_Functions.pdf (external link)

My guess is that the small subject problem is because you lost some reach with the larger sensor. A small subject on a 7D will be even smaller on the 1D3, and the focus point area is larger than the square on the screen. Get closer either physically or with glass.

Also if this is the PDF that i am thinking of it also helped me understand. But this PDF is not opening, i will see if i saved it somewhere.

We have been having some really bad forest fires up here in WA, which really sucks. But all the smoke has been providing amazing Sunrises and Sunsets. Here is a Sunrise from a couple of weeks ago, the fires and smoke are about 185 miles away from where this was shot.

When shooting the sunrise i decided to throw on the 300L to see what kind of different images i could create. A heron just so happened to be flying around and i got this image from it.

Just bought a second hand 1DIII. Mint conidtion, roughly 30k clicks, and 3 OEM batteries for $1,500. Very happy to be back with Canon. I missed the glass, mainly, but the 1D series bodies have felt molded to my hand ever since I picked up my dads 1D2.

I got my 1D3 repaired a few months ago due to ERR 99, and Canon said they replaced the AF assembly and that's what was causing the ERR 99, but it's been happening again, happened 3 times within 2 hours on a job I was on this past Sunday. So I'm going to call Canon today to see what my options are.

My question to you all is: Am I screwed? Is this 1D3 on it's way out? I can't afford a big ticket repair right now, but it feels like that's where I'm headed.

Difficult to tell you because i had that issue of error but not in short time, i had it on my 1Ds and 1Ds3, once or twice per year, but this year i didn't see that error at all on both bodies, maybe if i will use both bodies too much i may see, but in your case, it is not normal.

Thanks! I'm mainly a portrait photographer but the AF of the 1D and ruggedness of the body is what drew me in.

Why not a 1Ds MK III? Since you mainly shoot portraits?
