I sure as heck don't wish I'd chosen differently. Both were on the table, and I chose the 10.1MP 1.3x 1D3. I do miss the reach a little bit, but I'm looking for an excuse to get a 400 f/2.8 anyway. I just need to watch the budget doghouse... I might stepping-stone to a 300 f/2.8 first, but I really don't think it's enough reach for me.

Get a 300 2.8 plus kenko 1.4x extender. I think you will be quite pleased with results! Even a 2x will provide great results

I use a kenko 1.4 with my 300 f4 and I love it! I do notice a slight iq loss but there is less of a loss on the 2.8 version

I used the canon 1.4x with my 100-400mm with amazing results on our trip to south africa.

So I got my 1d3 back from CPS today and they made some electrical adjustments on my AF assembly, everything seems to be working properly although I haven't really shot anything with it just yet. I also did notice that there is a white dot inside the battery compartment.

Get the Canon series III teleconverters. There seems to be an improvement in IQ with them.

Thanks for all the thoughtful advice. It's great having input from folks with a lot of time with this body.

I took my 7D out the other day because I wanted a little more reach with the 70-200+1.4x. I hadn't shot with it for the last two months since getting the 1D3. I think I'm going to sell it. There was really nothing I can point to and say it didn't work for me but, it just wasn't the 1D experience. I think the array of the focus points is a factor. I change focus points a lot while shooting horses and the array of the 1D3 gives me better options. Focus seems faster and more accurate with the 1D3 also. Might start looking for a second 1D3.

Sorry... Don't know what glass was mounted on his Nikon D800...

He doesn't look very happy. Must be because his camera is too small...no built in grip like the Canon 1 series bodies, and/or because his lens isn't WHITE!

Great comparisons between the 1Diii and other bodies. I'm interested in picking one up (1Diii) but have been scared about investing in an older body because I wasn't sure if I'd be happy with its IQ & performance when compared to my 5Dii.

I thin if you do not print then the iq loss will be fine, as far as performance compared to your 5Dmkii you just may want to sell it based off of that faster alone. Haha

This is an amazing body, and worth the price. You can easily get one for $1400 on the boards

^ Sometimes cheaper than that... Deals with this body and the 1Ds2 (full frame) can be had these days...

I have seen them go for cheaper as well, but I think $1400 is a good starting point for pricing with this body
