Thanks waterrockets. Getting the bird to go where you want it to is the trick for sure. :)

So I took the 1D to its first dog show today.. this is one area where I really wanted to improve on since I show one of my dogs. Pics turned out much better than when I had my T1i, but I think there's still room for improvement (and I'm sure it's user error). I think I should've bumped my ISO up a bit.. these were all shot at ISO 800 & f/2.8 with my 24-70mm.. what do you guys think?

I'm considering selling the 24-70mm.. I thought it'd be perfect for shows but now that I shot with it there, I think I need something with more reach.

does anyone have some examples of a heavy crop with their 1d3.
I ask this because I regularly do bird photography.
I know the 1d3 does well at this with a 500 f4 and 1.4 TC and other big lenses.

however, those lenses are out of my reach. I really like my 100-400L and am going to stick with it but i have been looking at bodies with even better AF than my 60d (which does pretty well).

however, I regularly shoot from a monopod and do heavy (50% + crops) of small objects like birds and such.

can anyone post up some heavy crops and maybe the setup and approximate distance to subject?
Thanks!

I wish i can help you, i did something similar in another field, i crop heavily sports shots, i use 300 and many times it is very short so i crop a lot to get players nearly filing the frame, i don't like the results much, but if i resized to web less than 1000px it looks fine.

I grabbed a quick shot I had lying around in my library that I snapped of the Blue Angels and have attached the cropped and un cropped versions. Lens was 70-200 2.8L IS Mk1 at 200mm handheld.

In general, I'm not that fond of my heavy crops on either of my bodies (550D, 1D3). Here's 100%, and it worked out pretty well:

This one is getting a bit soft, and it's also 100%:
