Thx. I'm sure you'll be surprised to hear that swimmer is actually a beautiful 17-year-old girl. Swimming is amazing, as she looks so strong and fierce, and is really stunning out of the water -- probably the prettiest one sees in a given day...

I'll try dropping expansion to see if it changes anything.

Ok, I made two changes. I turned off the expansion, but from chimping, didn't look like that was the problem. I changed C.Fn III-2 to fast from slow. I had it set to slow per the "Guide to AI Servo AF Custom Functions" where it said to do so for swimming. Swimming is predictable enough that I'm able to keep the focus point where it needs to be at 200mm.

Not focusing on the drops here. I think I'll be able to notch up my quality a bit again this time around. Not that the parents seem to care -- they were loving the soft stuff out of my T2i -- but the 1D3's performance has been a dream for me, and I can see the difference.

This is my 11-yo son getting some laps in after an electrical storm cancelled his meet the previous day.

Agree, that mid-air tug-of-war is incredible. I was watching the Discovery mini-series on North America last night, and this belongs in there. Very cool.

The more I use this camera the more I'm impressed with it. I discovered a video on utube today and the guy had a way of setting up his 1DIII that really suits my style of shooting. It involved setting your auto focus drive to the 19 points, then setting the AF focus to auto focus point which then means the camera is tricked into focusing center side to side, you can then push the joy stick from side to side to set your focus point across the photo, works well, not sure if anyone in here uses that but thought Id post it. Loving the ability this camera has

Here's a link to the video, he has some useful tips anyway for anyone new to 1DIII. I've had mine a while but still pick up info I never realised the camera could do from time to time

Wow, surprising to see an update for such an old body, even if it is a minor update. Cool!

I hadn't seen that video. I'll check it out and see if there are any interesting bits I've been missing.

I don't have one, been thinking of getting one myself too. I have read that using the TC III there would be a reduction in AF speed, possibly a 50% reduction in speed and accuracy. But I've seen a lot of images where they were used and it doesn't look like it was that big of a deal though. Maybe someone with first hand experience will chime in...

How about the 2X zoom, worth giving it a try, would it auto focus on 200 F2.8?

^^^Great composition! Cool shot

Well, I shot the swim team this afternoon/evening. ~100 kids ordered action shots from the deck. 1D3 came home with two 16GB cards holding 7005 images! Yeah, I've got some culling to do...

Battery was at 80% after 7000 shots.

I think we made close to $2000 for the swim team. Good stuff.

Yeah, Great shot!

Very sharp bird there, especially given he's so tiny!

My buddie's border collie

Nice work on a black dog -- they're tougher to get detail in the fur.

Those are some sick shots. I need to take out my 1D3 out more. What settings did you use? AI servo and used all focus points?

Think my 1D mkIII is done and dusted :-( The AI Servo is very unstable and varies between front- and backfocusing with all lenses. 1-2 og 10 shots is in focus-ish. All lenses works like they should on my other cameras. Think I´ll say RIP and replace it with a mkIV. Anyone know the cost of repairing the AI Servo?
