can anyone answer these questions for me.

will 1DIII auto focus with the canon EF 1X4 attached to 100-400L, 200 F2.8L prime (mark 1) and how much degradation with the 100-400L?

Yes on the 100-400, and here are some photos: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=915950

200 f2.8l should be just fine. 1D bodies will AF with any combo up to an f/8 maximum aperture.

Thanks, I get torn between my 7D and 1DIII sometimes, I have just purchased a 1X4 TC (after having sold one ages ago and kicking myself for it) trying to work out how much reach I can get with 1DIII. if I'm not doing birds in flight at distance I prefer 1DIII

No, thinking about it though. It sounds like it's not brilliant with a teleconverter, but a couple threads with other cameras mention things like you can still get better detail with the extender than with out, at the same distance, so it's not destroying the image.

1.4x on the 100-400mm zoom is hit or miss. You need to stop down a bit, like f/11 ish.
I'm not a big fan myself, but in a pinch, it will do. I would not use it for BIF or any other action shots.

I bet if you check the 100-400mm example thread there will be plenty with T-Cons mixed in.

Thanks, probably use the TC with the 200 on the 7D then I guess, least it will be lighter than the 100-400

I'm desperate to upgrade from my Rebel XS, it's performing so badly, I've tried to kill it :P
Anyways... This is a 5+ year old camera, and is it worth to buy one now? The 7D is 300$ cheaper brand new but apparently the 1D3 has 10% better IQ. Won't even mention the better AF system.

If I do go for the 1D3, I plan on modifying my 10-22 so it can fit, because there's no other cheaper alternative! And buying 1 or 2 transcend 32gb CF cards.

I'm still doubtful wheter or not this is a good decision, I would like to wait for a 7D2 or 70D but time is running out

Tough to say what is right for different people. If my 1D3 vanished today, I would buy one tomorrow.

That's a nice thing about these older used cameras: they don't depreciate very fast. People who bought a used 7D three months ago have eaten significant losses. I'm at 1 year of 1D3 ownership, and I think I'm only down $100 on resell price.

So, if you think you might like one, grab one and try it out. Sell it in 3 months if you get tired of it or prefer the new 7D2 or 70D. Both of those bodies will likely hit the resale value of the 1D3, but not by that much -- they'll both be pretty expensive based on Canon's trends lately.

well I just got the 1X4 TC and have tried it out on the 1DIII with the 200 F2.8L and the 100-400L. It was late in the afternoon light was dying but it focused well with both lenses, I was surprised with the 100-400! Tomorrow I will test it in better light. On the 100-400 its saying the reach is 510, I thought it would be 540???? anyway is that going to be enough for cropping? Looks like it will be really good with the 200, the 200 and a TC also seems to work really well with the 5DII as well. may open up a number of options for traveling

I've was trying to find the perfect body to shoot with for a while. Going back and forth between 7D's and 5D2’s. once I shot a 1D3, I found my perfect camera. And I have a 5D because I love the images out of it. And for days I want to shoot with a much simpler camera. If you get a 1D3, 32gb cards will be overkill. I'm selling mine and dropped to 16gb cards. Which still hold over 1000 raw images per card. And is still overkill.
