Picked up a used 1D3 about week ago for a really good price, although it did not come with battery or charger. Had to wait until today until my battery/charger arrived from China (the original Canon's charger costs an arm AND a leg even used on ebay). The serial number is in 566XXX range so AF issues should have been worked out. Will need to play with different AF settings, there seems to be no shortage of custom AF functions in 1d3 . Anyway, just really excited to finally test it out after sitting on it for a week.

Congrats to you too. Good luck with the charger. It sounds like the non-canon models are hit and miss, which is why the price stays high for the originals.

Thanks. The information on third party chargers and batteries is very sparse on the net. Couldn't find any info about which batteries work and which have problems. I ended up buying DSTE battery/charger combo. Not that I would trust this, but it claims a 3400mAh battery capacity. As long as it charges and works, I will be happy.

love this camera for images that compete well with my 5DII, so much so that I have to look at the data sometime to work out which camera I used

It does look like it is a hit or miss. The charger I got actually works fine - it did successfully charge both the Canon OEM battery and a third party DSTE battery that came along with the charger. The DSTE battery on the other hand is crap, it has fully discharged after taking 140 shots and then sitting in a turned off camera for a day and a half. That's some stellar performance ! Maybe I just got a defective one, who knows. I contacted the seller, we'll see what they say.

gah! Great news on the charger though. OEM batteries aren't that expensive, and the one that came with the body is probably fine anyway. My ancient OEM battery still amazes me (7000 shots brought it down to 80%)

I doubt the 3rd party charger has the calibrated/performance button/feature like the OEM but maybe that might help.

I do hope this isn't normal for these batteries as I just took delivery of 2 of them for my 1DIV, but I guess if it is I'm glad I got 2 instead of just 1.

I've used this brand on my 5dIII and they don't hold a charge as well as the OEM and other 3rd parties, but pretty close. They are one of the 3rd parties that still 100% report properly after the firmware update, so that's why I order this brand of 3rd party. Then the fact that I could get 2 for less than the price of 1 OEM even if they didn't hold a charge quite as long(I was expect to close) it seemed like a no brainer.

Anyway I hope get better results, and if so yours will start performing better after the next charge or can get it exchanged easily.
