Had a first encounter with a pair of Goldcrests earlier this month. They are the tiniest bird I have ever seen and when I looked them up at home it was confirmed: they are the smallest European bird. It didn't help that they were in the thick of a tree and stayed there, so most of the shots show them behind lots of clutter. I only managed two shots where I had a clear view of one and this is my favourite.

Wow! The heron image is incredible. You made the best out of that lighting. Nicely done.

I agree with Dave3222, Levina. Excellent shots, especially of the Grey Heron. Glad to know you are enjoying your 1DIII!

Thanks, Max. This copy of the 1D3 is really excellent. A world apart from the other one I had! I have to say though that prices of the 1D4 are coming down so much at the moment that I'm contemplating buying one. I know you would encourage me to do so. :)

I find I always need some time to really make a camera my own. Just give it some time. Sweet looking dog. Congrats!

Along with the screen, which is vastly superior, the 1D4 has a bunch of incremental improvements over the 1D3 in my admittedly limited experience.

Being 2.5 years newer, it should have a longer "life" on the officially supported and CPS eligible lists.
All the extra pixels means you can be sloppier when framing, as cropping is more feasible.
The high ISO capability gives you about an extra stop noise wise.
It handles exactly like the 1D3 (which is good; means it kinda "thinks" with you).
The newer auto focus system takes more thought to set up, but is more flexible, and supposedly more accurate.
It makes good use of faster CF cards.
It does video, if that is your thing.

But it's a lot more expensive; here in Canada you can easily get two good 1D3s for the price of a single 1D4. And, the 1D4s will depreciate much more than the 1D3s, because the latter are already almost at their residual value.

The question each potential upgrader has to answer is, are the improvements worth that much to you?

All true, Max. Thanks for the line up of pros and cons! I always said the 1D4 had to drop below 2000 euro before I would get one, and they're starting to get there now. I just saw one offered by my shop for € 1595 (which equals dollars as with cameras and computers there is no conversion, one euro = one dollar). This particular copy seems to have quite a bit of wear though, so I'll pass up, but there are a few more for sale right now that are below the 2000 euro mark also. I'll wait a while, see what happens, but I wouldn't be surprised to find myself buying one this year... :)

In the mean time I am very much enjoying my 1DIII. It's still too cold for me to go to the country side, so here's another Heron shot I took a few hours ago in a local park.
