That's odd, because the 1DIII's battery is supposed to be far superior to the one in the 1DII(n). This is my own experience as well. With my 1DIII I get something between 2000 and 2500 shots (I shoot in raw and highest quality). With my 1DIIn it was 800, 900 tops. How many shots can you do on a fully charged battery?

This is going to sound stupid, there is a button on the front of my MkIII, shutter side below the lens mount. Can someone please tell me what this is??

Yep, sounds like your battery is passed it's best. I used to have a 1D2N and the battery life was nowhere near as good as my 1D3......I'm struggling to remember the last time I charged it!
