Why would an SDK be needed to port iCal, iSync and Safari to the iPhone when they're made by Apple? Also, 3rd part apps are already showing up (external link) for the iPhone so a dedicated SDK isn't really necessary.

Yes, Apple has said that any web applications that work in Safari should also work on the iphone... so the Windows version allows developers without access to a Mac to develop/test their applications.

Yes, really. You might re-read where the potential exploit was found. It wasn't in OS X, that's for sure. The rest of it is simply Zovi's opinion (he's an MS guy). Since OS X (and Linux, for that matter) are based upon UNIX, security has been an issue since the 1970s. (For example of Vista, see this Information Week (external link) article.)

Notice, that link is a Mac source as well...

Actually, the original article was published by ComputerWorld and reprinted in MacWorld.

Not trying to start any brand war here, but to blindly assume that a Windows platform can't be secure is a very illogical approach.

No one is saying that it can't be (as in, maybe someday), but XP certainly isn't and Vista has already been exploited in the wild.

As a sidenote, I wouldn't use a "beta" browser on a production system regardless of who made it.

Nor I. No Safari 3 for me until it's been through beta.

(For example of Vista, see this Information Week article.)

That's a pretty slanted article. The UAC issue he mentions is if someone were to run Windows as an administrator. Why would they? It's like running under a root account. You could do the same thing with OS X or Linux, given administrative privledges from the get-go.

As for security, compare the first 90 days of Vista to the first 90 days of OS X Tiger.

Apple fixed 20 vulnerabilities in the first 90 days, 8 were listed in the National Vulnerability Database as severe. I find it interesting that Windows XP only had 14 in the first 90 days, 8 of which were classified as severe in the National Vulnerability Database.

Now for Windows Vista. In the first 90 days, there have been 5. One is classified as severe.

This is all fact, based upon information found in the National Vulnerability Database.

but XP certainly isn't and Vista has already been exploited in the wild.

As well as OS X.

But I digress...

I do hope that Safari development pushes color managed browsers to the forefront. Color Management in browsers has been part of the HTML specifications for quite some time now, it's just been largely ignored up to this point.

Regardless of the tiring Ford vs. Chevy vs. Canon vs. Nikon vs. Windows vs. OS X debate, one thing does hold true. The competition is good for all sides involved. Without it, whatever was used would simply grow stagnant and never truely evolve.

Does it really matter? ;) Most of the world won't be using color managed browsing so we can't upload pics outside the sRGB color space anyway. Maybe one day though.

I'm not sure what you mean by your post above. If a picture has an ICC profile embedded in it and you are using a color managed program to view it, the colors will come out looking the way it's supposed to instead of being too over saturated or too dull. And just because one isn't using a color managed system doesn't mean that one can't download color space tagged images. :)

This is in regards to web browsing is it not? My point was that if we here whom undrstand color management began uploading AdobeRGB images to POTN because we use Safari and the rest of POTN, whom do not understand color management and use a non-color managed web browser, view these photos we would get non-stop messages saying "your image looks washed out, try adding some saturation."

So if you want to upload larger gamut images because you can now use a color managed web browser, then by all means do so. But I don't think the world is ready for that just yet. ;)

There are already a number of so-called iPhone applications in beta stages that you can test on supported browsers like Safari, IE7 and Firefox.

I'm not entirely convinced that businesses are going to adopt the iPhone, although I'm sure it'll do well in the consumer market.

For business, Apple hasn't addressed the availability of VPN or secure link. That leaves the option of placing business applications straight on the web in a secure area. Not always the best choice with sensitive data, regardless of the platform used. I don't think there's an option to remotely disable/wipe the device if it's lost either, which is another strike against business use. Also browser applications won't use the touch screen from what I understand. For this to succeed, that would certainly need to change. One other area that the iPhone falls short in is offline access, unlike some Google applications which stillallow you some access. The speed of the native AT&T network isn't going to be the best either, in regards to online applications.

we would get non-stop messages saying "your image looks washed out, try adding some saturation."

True, until a color-managed browser becomes standard fare on most on the shelf computers.

Installed it. Doesn't work. Come on Apple, beta's should at least "work".

Yes, what you're saying makes sense. But, like I said in my previous post, I didn't know what you were trying to say in your previous post. I was simply responding your statement highlighted below which is not an accurate statement.

These are unknowns at this point. However, since the phone runs on OS X, it will be pretty secure out of the box. It may also have VPN and File Vault (128-bit on-disk encryption) options, since these are standard with OS X. For "secure link" are you referring to an audio phone call that is secure? Are there other phones that incorporate this?

Well we don't sadly. I was being sarcastic. I've installed it on my machine and my wife's. Neither work. Both run Vista and use IE and Firefox issue free. I even keep Opera handy on mine.

Being a former Mac support team leader and .net integration support team member for a large software company, I know my way around tech support problems.

Simply put, Apple rushed this out the door to speed up iPhone 3rd party dev and it's crap for now.

Yeah ... it is Cossie ;-)a Zero problems on my system.

I am a big Apple guy of old but tied to PC's for last 4 years. been using Opera since version 2 and tried all the others on a regular basis. Nothing beats Opera for all around usability once you set it up IMO. However Safari has take what makes Opera so sweet and improved it with the Apple look and feel and enhanced speed. It will become my default browser once the final release comes out.

Yes, I know.

I was being sarcastic.

So was I.

I've only tried it (the update) on my Mac Mini booted into XP Pro. It worked for surfing, but I didn't exhaustively test it. I really don't do much on the Dark Side of my computer. :)
