I am looking at buying a 1Gb microdrive for my G2. Are these faster (reading and writing) than the compactflash cards that operate at 24x speed?

The 1 gb microdrives are not known for state of the art speed. However, even in very fast cameras they seem to have at least average performance:

the speed of any card will vary considerably in each camera and the camera is often the limiting fator, and unpredictably so. Some CFs fast in one camera may be slow in another, and relative performance with large files, small files, write or read may all vary. Consumer digitals certainly are much slower than professional dSLR equipment. You may pay a premium for a little bit of speed, but if shooting fast sequences is important to you, go for it. I have always read good performace feedback about the Ridata CFs in the G2.
