For the photos I really treasure, I save as a TIFF. Saving and re-saving TIFF files does not result in a loss of data, unlike JPEG. In the future, I might want to try something different in Photoshop on these pictures, so I like to have the TIFF file.
Good point. I do all my work as a TIFF and save. Then I apply any sharpening, flatten the image, convert to 8-bit, and convert to my printer's profile before saving as a new file fo uploading.
The file I mentioned earlier was 8 layers, 6000 x 4800 pixels, and around 600MB. The final jpeg for uploading was 19MB. Could you imagine trying to send a 600MB file to an online printer?
