I had been looking for a little p/s to use as a backup travel camera, and had every intention of deciding between the G7 and S5is. But by chance, I came across the FujiFilm f31d, which has messed everything up. Not only is it dirt cheap, but is has jaw dropping high ISO performance. It is at least a full stop better then the Canons, if not two. ISO 800 is completely usable and 1600 is good for smaller (5x7) prints. It is not canon dslr quality, but is clearing better then every other p/s without all the image quality issues normally found in high iso shots. This has screwed up everything. The dang little camera doesn't have IS, which I would like, nor is it high MPX, it is only 6.1 mpx. But what is the point of high pixel counts or IS if the image comes out noisy. I am so close to picking one up.... emotionally because it just does so well. But how I can't keep thinking I will miss all those other features on the Canons.

Have any of you shot with this little guy, or bought one? It wouldn't be the worst mistake to buy it... but I feel like there is this huge caveat I am missing. It's just too cheap and too good to be true.

It isn't very wide but only you can decide upon the merits of that. Is IS that neccesary in a point and shoot? I don't believe it is, most of the time. These issues aside the iso capability and IQ makes Canon look a bit weary. Try comparing it at face et face on www.lesnumeriques.com (external link)

The review at DP suggests that the F-series cameras in Fuji's line are jekyl-and-hyde; i.e., they perform very well in low light, but the auto exposure can be off when taking photos in daylight. Having grown used to the highly useable ISO with Canon's DSLRs, I too have been disappointed by the G7s relatively poor performance above 200 ISO. If Fuji released a G7 competitor using the same sensor as the F series with RAW capability and full manual control, I would jump at it. Until then, any choice in the p&s segment would appear to be a compromise, in my case going with the G7.

i'm getting an F30 as my pocketable camera (G6 is just too big sometimes), they simply beat the crap out of the Canon SD series. Fuji put a lot of R&D into that sensor and it certainly shows, the higher ISO shots are terrific for a camera its size. It would be a good balance with my G6 since it will probably do night shots better than G6 and I'll have the G6 for day shots.

Keep in mind though, that the day performance on the F30's (F31 is the same thing essentially) isn't that shabby either. Browse through flickr and such and you'll find people had no problems with taking some great daytime shots with this. It's just that its exceedingly great in low light shots.

as a pocket camera I have settled for a minolta G600. Only available second hand and rare as hens teeth.
Excellent quality, No fringing at all, can correct distortion in PT lens.where drawing is important. ( I got them to do a profile)
For day to day shots as good as My G6 and at iso 400 quite a bit better.

Not as good for panoramas and has no histogram or raw.
