Question about B&H and Leica cameras

I realize this is a Canon forum, and it's why I bought my 30D and lenses from B&H. I recently assembled 5 Leica range finder film cameras and about a dozen lenses and other gear that was passed down from my father's estate. I was going to put it on eBay, but ran across B&H's ad that they purchased used equipment. (Here's the page of stuff -http://ebay.woodenpropeller.com/Leica.html (external link))

I got a call from them offering $4700 for the whole lot, which seemed reasonable, although I don't know the equipment at all. My question is, has anyone had experience doing this with them? The figure is an estimate and they say it could be higher or lower, but if lower they will send the equipment back to me at their expense. I'm thinking of just trading it in towards a EOS 400mm lens or something similar for the 30D>

I'd love to hear your advice.

If it's from your fathers estate I say keep it as a memory to him. I have an old Brownie that was my dad's that I am going to keep forever.

I've kept one, but there is still a bunch of other stuff.

you'll get more money selling directly (obviously that's more work) i suggest you go to a leica forum for help on pricing it. fredmiranda.com also have a lot of leica people.

looking at your list, that sounds low to me--(by a lot), but b&h have to get their cut if you sell to them.

That sounds incredibly cheap for 5 Leicas and a dozen lenses. I'd expect to pay a good $20-50k (depending on what line of lenses) for that kinda gear.

Try listing some of it here, and also as they said, on fm.

B&H historically pays 40 to 50 percent of current retail pricing for used equipment in excellent condition.

There is no doubt you could get much higher prices by selling it yourself. That is, if you can sell it. It takes time, can be a major hassle too. Have you sold on Ebay before? If you have experience selling on Ebay, go for it; what have you got to lose? The market usually determines what a fair price is for a particular item. But I digress.

I've taken the easy out a few times already. I've gone up to the second floor (or is it the third, I can't remember, just know it's the door next to the return dept on 34th street, not in the main store) and traded stuff in; grabbed the store credit and went right downstairs and bought what I wanted. All without the trouble of selling it, paying paypal fees, shipping it, etc.

There's also a place in New York that specializes in buying and selling used Leica called Tamarkin. They take out full page ads in certain camera magazines. Check them out. Get prices on individual pieces. You'll do better than selling a package.

Good luck.

Very true, but if you're never going to use it, what's the sense in keeping it? You know that better than anybody.

I'm hemming and hawing right now as to whether to sell the 1dsmkII. I'm liking the new one so much. But I would miss the FF, especially when it comes to fisheye which I enjoy.

Wow definitely way low on BH. The M bodies alone seem like they'd be worth what BH was offering.
