Ok Ive been looking for a 5D for a little while now. Even more so since I got a wedding on saturday (I know last minute but hey oppertunity arose and I took it)

Now I called a local store and checked on their prices, of course being retail its about $500 more than B&H, yet I need it by Sat.

Now while trying to juke the price down, which I did but not far enough, I was told he had a 1D mkII, used, w/ a little over 6K actuations on it for $2300?

Now with this being my first pro camera option I am not familiar with the re-sale of these bodies.

Question is...

Would you pass on this oppertunity? Not....should I pass on it...........would YOU!

That's a good price. If I had a spare $2300, I'd jump on it.

Just for info, why would you jump on it? AF speed, build, focal point?

Oh Im probably 55%-5D....40%-1D mkII.....5%-30D.
I just thought to myself (without even knowing the resale value of a mkII) that it was a pretty good price. I have the feeling it was a display, a camera that old with that little of actuations on it. I mean theyre a pro camera store (only one in Oklahoma) and I have faith that they have taken care of it. Unlike Best Buy who leaves off lenses and chidlens (I spelt it the way I intended:p ) touch the mirror and sensor inside. Makes me gasp, literally. I digress.

The oppertunity of a 1D falling in my lap like this isnt very often. So just getting the opinions of the well respected POTN members:D

yeah I know the 24-70L would be a brilliant pair with the 5D:D:D:

While the 1DMkII is obviously a great camera, I'd think that the 5D would be better for you if your main need is wedding photography.

Well tomorrow will probably be when I decide which one Ill go with.
They said I could come in and tinker with both, bring in my CF cards, take some test shots and take'em home to analyze them.

U think if I walked in with $2600 cash they would refuse?lol
I told them all I had was that amount (which is the truth) and they still could only go to $2850 + tax:|

I can be persuasive, lets see if they can be influenced:p

Personally, I would pay the extra $200 for the 5D at your local shop. That's not that bad of a mark-up seeing as how you need it now and that purchase will make the bond between you and that shop that much stronger.

I think that price is more in keeping with a 1D MkIIn. I've seen 1D MkII's go for much less, around $1900 to $2000. If your focus (pun intended) is mostly weddings, the 5D would be a better choice. Image files from the 5D are a good step above the 1D MkII. The 1D MkII and MkIIn are intended more for sports shooters and wildlife photographers who need absolutely fast AF and high frame rates.

Well heres the skinny on the wedding.

I asked if she wanted flash to be used and she said and I quote, "I dont care. Whatever it takes to get the shot I want, do it."

So I dont really need a camera to handle noise all that well. BUT.....and heres where the dilema comes in. I dont have the extra $200, I am busting my "camera gears savings" account here.( Yeah I literally have a savings just for camera gear.....soooooooo):p

Thats another reason why the 1D was so friggin (and still is) tempting.

EDIT: Oh yeah and I would buy from B&H BUT!!!!....I have the money in cash right now, and not in the savings, so using the CC is not an option. If I did I would have already and shipped it next day delivery.;)

I'd go with the Mark II. What is your most common type of shooting? That is an important consideration. If sports, or something needing speed, then the II, if landscapes and portraits, the 5D. The Mark II is the better deal, can't go wrong really due to resell and expected very low depreciation at that price. When given an even choice, go with the PRO model!

They both have their strong points but my biggest thing is always high ISO as opposed to needing super fast focus. That is why I got the Mark III. Best of both worlds.

I got a 5D coming on Friday as backup though.

I KNOW. GO PRO!!!!:p
BUT, I shoot more portraits. So yes I know 5D, but geeez a 1D doesnt drop in like this:p

Thats like me driving a hybrid then the oppertunity to drive a benz drops in for nearly the same price as the hybrid. I dont NEED a benz, but......its a benzino man:p

Again Ill more than likely decide tomorrow when I get my hands on'em

I think you'll be really hard press to find a a 1D MK2 with 6k shots for the price you listed.

Kid24, if you can work the price down a little, it maybe worth it to give the 1D a try and if you feel like the 5D is what you want, then selling the 1D will not loose much money.

Yeah reselling the 1D mkII isnt a bad idea. Who knows.
