I am relatively new on this forum, so please pardon me if this is a repeat question.

Last weekend I shot a wedding using 2 cameras, a 20D and a 30D.
Can someone recommend a way for me to combine both cameras photos into a chronological order (particularly filename order)?

I am particular concerned when I shoot more than one photo in a second, like in a 5fps burst. I don't want to miss or accidentally delete anything in the "combine" process.

Thank you.

Unless you synchronized the time on both cameras before you started shooting, you may have to sort them manually.

The time on each camera is within a 1-2 seconds of each other.

Use software that ingests the images and renames them using the date/time they were taken + the original filename (if you need to refer to it) - Job Done!

Can someone suggest a software package to do this? Preferrable if it is free.
I do have Photoshop CS2, IrfanView, and ACDsee v8. Is there a way to do it with any of these programs? The filenames from the 2 cameras do not overlap.

If your on a Mac then its easy and painless to do via an Automator action, we shoot with 4 cameras Raw + Small JPG and then an automator action is used to rename the file names to date + time + original filename then split JPGS and RAWS into 2 seperate directories.

You can do the same in Bridge, just batch rename the files in each seperate directory to date + time + original filename.

I shoot with two cameras. All I do is download all of my cards to one folder, then sort the folder by "date picture taken". You can enable this column by going to View->Choose Details.

Once they are all sorted by date (and time) taken, I drag them into a freeware renaming program called AF5 (http://www.fauland.com/af5.htm) (external link), which renames them in the order that they were sorted when I dragged them in.

Takes less time than it took to write this reply...

Sync'd cameras with computers, sort by date, comes out correct. You have to attach the cameras to the computer to properly sync their times.

JChin - sort by date then to any tweaks manually.

I've never used Adobe Bridge. I copy the files from the CF via a card reader to my local hard drive. Does Adobe Bridge work with local hard drive directory?

The end results that I want is a directory of the combined photos of the 2 cameras where the filenames are ordered by the time the photos were shot.

See my post above...that's the easiest and cheapest way to do it.

How do you handle it if theres 2 files the same name Jamie ?

We download each card to its own folder partly to get away from the dupe names issue and partly so that we can check that we have the images from all the cards. So if weve shot with CF cards 1 to 6 we start off with dirs 1 to 6 on the laptop before we run the action to rename and combine them.

I download the cards using Photomechanic (mainly for the speed), which renames them initially as they download. It also downloads everything to the same folder.

Before I had PM, I used the standard Windows Scanner and Camera wizard to rename the files as they downloaded.

So I rename them twice...the first time when I download them, the 2nd time when they are sorted by date.

Holy Cow! Thanks for bringing this up. I just discovered a couple of hidden tags in Photomechanic that allow me to add the datestamp and timestamp to the filename when I download the cards. So now I don't have to rename them...when I sort by name they will automatically be in chronological order. My workflow just got two steps faster!

Photo Mechanic is the coolest!
