You may have found out that you can not use Photoshop CS2 for your files from the new Mark III
Adobe will make you upgrade to CS3 to support the Mark III.
Everyone should complain to Adobe about their discision to not support the Mark III in Photoshop CS2

That's been Adobe's policy with all previous versions of Photoshop. Why do you think it would (or should) be different with PS CS2?

You can still use DPP to convert to 16-bit TIF. Been going on for several years now with ACR. If new camera comes out just before or after new Adobe PS major upgrade, plan on having to get upgrade. For CS it was even worse, I had to get Win XP and was worried that for CS3 I would HAVE to get Vista, wasn't ready for it and luckily apparently neither was Adobe.

This has been standard practice since the beginning with Adobe. Cs3 is worth the upgrade, period. But if you do not want to upgrade then convert the raw files with DNG or use DPP.

CS3 works perfectly fine in XP so no worries there either.

Question: When you convert from RAW to TIFF in DPP, is the metadata preserved or is it stripped out? Just wondering, since I'm doing exactly what you describe above with my archaic version of CS coupled with my nifty new Rebel XTi

CS3 is great, or like people have said convert to DNG using the free adobe converter and use CS2.

Ignoring for a moment that the metadata remains with the CR2 file...

If you "convert and save" (or batch process, some of the Canon only metadata is lost.

If you cheat and "sent" to photoshop from within DPP, a whole lot more of the metadata gets stripped out in the process, but it is quicker that way (at least for me ).

DPP will also strip IPTC info.
I use iView to copy it back in.... Would be nice if Canon fixed that.

I was just about to purchase adobe lightroom. Does anyone know if it supports the Mark III?

Yes. Any program that supports ACR 4.1 will accept mk.III files

No it currently does not! Lightroom has not been upgraded yet. You have to wait for version 1.1 which will be a free upgrade to version 1.0. The workaround to this is to use the DNG convertor to convert your 1dMKIII RAW files to DNG and then import those to Lightroom.
