10D macro... on the cheap

I have 49mm filters that I use on my G2. I noticed that the filter threads on my 50mm f1.8 lens for my 10D were 52mm. Hmm?... I thought. I bought a 52-49mm step down ring for the 50mm lens, and stuck my Hoya +10 close up lens on it.

You can see the very shallow DOF of these shots (1/320 @ f5.0, ISO400). It was sunny when I stopped by the park, but after a few minutes of walking around... it got really dark, and a thunderstorm rolled through... which of course went away, revealing the beautiful, golden "after the storm" light, as soon as I got home Anyway... I could have stopped it down to possibly f10 or so in direct light. I'm hoping to try that out soon, and see how much more DOF I can squeeze out of this set up.

Anyway, just letting those of you who have upgraded to the 10D from a G1/G2, and were using the 49mm lensmate adapter know, that you can use your old filters on your 50mm f1.8 lens with relative success, and NO VIGNETTING

Incredible macro shots. When you try using the Hoya R72 you have to focus and compose the shot with the filter off and then put the filter on to take the shot. Make sure that the lens is in manual focus also. good luck.

There is a focus shift that occurs after putting the filter on. That was my experience with the 50mm lens anyway. If I manually focused, then put the filter on and shot, the resulting image was out of focus. I'll give it a try on a day with better light... and when I have more time. I'm just stoked that I can use these filters on the new camera... even though it's only this lens.
