I'd be willing to settle for just the one on the far right. ;)

So you have the 14-24, and I can have the 24-70 ;).

That seems like a reasonable compromise.

I'll send Permie a PM with shipping instructions! :D

Can you add lens caps and cell phones to the poll, please?

Squirrels should take the place of ducks, IMO. They are infinitely cuter!

I'm so jealous! Ooh, we have a print of the same painting on the wall!

Oh, how does the Nikon 24-70 compare with the L? I loved my L - it's the only lens I really miss from my Canon days (although the 85mm f/1.8 was also special, the 17-40, 24-105, and 70-200 f/4 were nice, but not mindblowing, like the brick).

it is very similar to a good copy of the 24-70...I didn't do any technical tests, though my husband still has my 24-70 canon version...so we could do side by side's...on the ds2 and the D700 but you'd have so many camera factors that it might not be a valid test.

I can say that these 3 zooms are incredibly sharp...beyond what I imagined a zoom would be (I put them, the 24-70 & 14-24 nearer prime caliber). The 14-24 is the one that's impressed me the most though, in a comparison. I owned the 17-40 and the 16-35II, I was never impressed with the edges on the 16-35II (FF and wide open) and this thing, even wide open can produce sharp edges on a FF. It's truly amazing.

Sounds good - I'm not interested in lots of pixel peeping etc - if the images have that same magic, that's all I'm interested in (actually, I'm waiting for the Sigma HSM 24-70 to come out, and see if I can get one of those, and hold out on the cash for the Nikon).

me either (re: pixel peeping)...it's just got to look great IRL :)

Honestly, the more I use this, the more I see the benefits of both systems. They aren't far removed from one another. Canon appears to have much better primes (nikon's zooms have the edge I think). I haven't really tested the nikon AF system in depth (for action yet) but canon does have a vg AF system in their one series cameras. Ergonomically, canon has the edge imo. Both systems are capable of producing great images...so I just tell people to choose whichever system they are most comfortable with, do research before you buy lenses so you end up with good ones and then get out and shoot

That's like a breath of fresh air Permie!
Sensible unbiased advice, a rare commodity indeed. I really do agree, it doesn't matter what you use...

On the other hand it's nice to see a bit of madness in a thread, it makes life interesting  and POTN can be very interesting...

cheers

Thank you for your valued opinion. You overlooked one very important fact however: Canon boxes are much more photogenic. For people such as myself who only take pictures of boxes, this is a critical factor.

It takes some getting used to as far as the shutter button placement (it's like it's on a mountain that your finger has to climb) and the front scroll wheel, but I was pleasantly surprised (because I never heard this topic discussed) to learn the button was a soft-press switch like the 1D/5D use. I am not a huge fan of having "click" buttons as triggers.

The one thing I love on the Nikon, ergonomically, is the quick-and-easy method of metering and AF change, as well as the fast switching/tuning of AE bracketing.

And what would you guys do with some empty Nikon boxes? After all, you just asked for the boxes, not the lenses that came in them.

Permie, one shootout I would LOVE to see is the Nikon 14-24 vs the Zeiss 21 2.8 Distagon :D.
