Argh... Frustrating workflow

Hey y'all. i am trying to quicken up my workflow... right now it is slow and takes forever...

Right now i am opening in DPP white balancing and then converting to 16bit TIFF using batch process. Then i open the TIFF in Photoshop Elements and crop and do any other changes that need to be made. I start off by having Elements open up all the pics and do auto levels on them just to start off. After i am done in photoshop i then batch process to High quality Jpeg... my computer's speed isn't a problem.. it only 9 months old.. and fast with everything else.. but this just takes forever to do say 100 pictures... blah...

how can i speed this process up?

Stop using multiple programs? Use DPP to correct levels, contrast, saturation, WB, etc, and only use Elements for sharpening, cloning, and cropping. This way you can batch process in DPP more edits and not just WB. You perhaps, might only need to save a full res JPEG now and not a TIFF (this is a personal preference, though).

You might look at Adobe's Lightroom. I find it a useful tool to manage the workflow and make adjustments to large numbers of images. I then export to JPEG's using Lightroom. Dennis

well don't you need a TIFF to do most changes in Photoshop that might require layers?

You only need a TIFF if you plan to save the file with layers. This is why I said "perhaps" because you didn't specify layers in your first post.

Also, why use DPP, and then do *auto* (does more hrm then good IMO) levels in PSE???

Don't open all files at once, open them in smaller batches. (Say 10 or so at a time).

You have to use tiff if you want to use 16bpc. (Only neccesary if you use a larger space then AdobeRGB, or do a lot of levels/curves/color correction in PS IMO).
Otherwise, 8bpc will do fine. As will jpg probabely. (You can also save a jpg after working on it as a psd file or tif.)


The way I do it:

DPP; adjust all that is possible and needed (anything 'global')
Export as 16bpc WideGamut RGB, or 8bpc AdobeRGB. (Either tif or jpg, depending on useage)
Open in PSCS2.
Local adjustments, crop
Save .psd file
Resize for print/web/whatever
Sharpen
Convert to sRGB and Save as jpg (web) or Convert to whatever color space is needed and save as tif or jpg as needed (print, press, whatever).
