Dumb software question:

I have a Digital XT purchased a year or so ago that came with Digi Photo Prof (1.6.1), Zoom Browse (5.1.0.41), and PhotoStitch 3.1.14. Several months ago I purchased a 570 IS that came w/the same Digi Photo Prof and PhotoStitch, but the Zoom Browse was 5.8.0.74.

On Canon's website, the latest versions of the above are 3.0.1.a, 5.8b, and 3.1.19 respectively. Wanting the latest and greatest, I downloaded the latest versions from Canon's website to CD, but am unsure what to do next -- do I just install from the CD? Do I need to uninstall the original programs first?

Just run 'em, they'll override your older versions

No, just install them. They'll overwrite the previous software and most likely keep your old settings. And, just an FYI, you cannot upgrade your software from Canon if the original (from CD) is not on your computer. Upgrades require the previous software to be installed. The only time you should remove the old software (and you're not installing an upgrade) is when the first number in the version changes one or more higher. Example, you have version 2.01.4 but now have a CD with version 3.1.0; you should then remove the previous software before installing.

Thanks for the advice.

First, a clarification: What I have on CD are the "Upgrades" that I downloaded from the Canon website and burned to CD myself; I do not have a commercial program CD with the latest versions.

Secondly, regarding versions, the Zoom Browser and PhotoStitch that already are on my computer are versions 5 and 3 respectively, as are the latest updates -- therefore, if I understand you correctly, the updates should overwrite the existing programs with no problem.

However, the Digi Photo that already is on my HD is version 1.6, whereas the update is version 3.0. If I understand you correctly, I need to uninstall the existing version 1.6 first -- but if I uninstall the existing version 1.6 first, I no longer will have the program on my HD, which the upgrade apparantly checks for. What do I do in that case?

No, do not uninstall Vs. 1.6. Simply run the Vs. 3.0 installation and it will overwrite the older version. You will find that 3.0 is vastly better than 1.6, with many new features. Enjoy it.

I installed all three updates, and have one problem.

The Digi Prof and Photo Stitch appear to work OK, but the Zoom Browser has a problem. The updated Zoom Browser can recognize my A570 IS, but cannot recognize my Digi Rebel XT -- I get a popup window that says the attached camera is incompatable. Is there another file I need to download and install in order to get the program to recognize the Digi Rebel XT??

Sometimes computers can be a pain :)

I'm not sure about the PowerShot, but my wifes (A600) works just fine on my computer along with my XT. They “may” be different TWAIN drivers, but the only way to be sure is just install both types; there is no harm in installing both drivers. I can even put my old 300D (before I sold it) on my computer and it would work – albeit a little quirky and I 'know' the 300D and XT are much different TWAIN driver versions that are not compatible. If your PowerShot shows up in 'My Computer' (guessing you have Windows XP) then everything is working driver wise – the problem will then be with the software in which case you should download and install the Zoom Browser from the PowerShot upgrades menu not from the XT updates. Hope that helps.
