looks kinda soft. is this the 100% crop? EXIF please. i just ordered my Kenko 1.4x TC. now i'm kinda changing my mind... just kidding. ;-)a also, i think it's better to save your images for posting with ICC Profile set to sRGB. the RGB profile will have color problem on different browsers.

Condyk, "sick" is not exactly the reaction I was going for  Any suggestions?

You can just bring it into Photoshop, crop it, then reduce size to 600px across and then 'save for web' and hope for luck. A well exposed shot doesn't need much more to look decent. Nice bird so hope it works out. Not that hopeful on it tho ;-)a

Gotta admit, I had an ulterior motive in posting these shots. I've got a pretty decent eye for framing and cropping, but not much for exposure or the remaining pp. Got decent gear, so the problem has to be mine :(

Read Kelby and Peterson's books, but I'm just not getting any better at this stuff. Startin' to think we'd all be better off if I sold my photo gear and found another hobby. It's just not comin' together...

Yeah, unfortunately the picture is not well focused, as the tubes cause you to lose infinity focus and it appears as if you were a bit too far away for proper focus.

Your second pic is WAAAAAYYYYY oversharpened, not noisy. That's what Connie is referring to.

Good try though.

don't despair. why not shoot in jpeg until you get the basics down? you'll see better results and be able to post pictures to the net easier for others to see.

Composition is harder to learn that PP ... really, so if you can do that then it is a better palce to be than a PP expect who can't shoot a decent shot. In normal day-light conditions stick the camera in AV mode, 200ISO and just use aperture. Exposure will be very good most of the time. If it gets darker then up the ISO.

Again, a decently exposed shot doesn't need much PP anyway, so what is there to learn ;-)a You need to experiment a lot using manual mode to learn properly. That shot is a tiny bird taken from quite a way so very tough to get a good shot, but the issue is definately the PP after the event. That is why I say just try it doing the bare minimum.

well said, condyk... maybe better yet, start with ISO100 if it suits well, you don't need the Noise Ninja. :-)

I think you're trying to work with a very tiny crop. You say this hummer was about 50 feet away? I shoot a 500mm lens + 2x tc and I can't get a useable image of a hummer from 50 feet. ;) Start with closer objects until you make better, sharper images. The 70-200 f 4L + Kenko 1.4x tc is capable of much better images than the one you've posted. :)
