I would think this would be a hard flower to shoot as it is really busy flower. I think if you could isolate it, it would show of the detail better. DOF looks very good. I guess at first swag I would simplify the background if at all possible. Interesting flower - thanks for sharing.

sweet picture.
I think you did a pretty good job on a hard image to get right.
Might just be a tad overexposed but with this kind of image there are always compromises.

I agree that it is quite a busy picture and you have done well with the only lens you have.

For a flower head like this, you want a macro lens. For a flwer head where the one bulb is quite large, you can use the lens you have.

Can you get any closer and remove the stalks from the shot. Maybe look to focus closer on one of the heads.

seems a bit Grainy to me : - ?
And I agree with the others the flower itself is far too busy.
Maybe perhaps a tulip or something less busy would be better.

Yes, for the type of flower, you did very well.

I have been shooting flowers almost every day for the past 3 months, and lately I've seen this flower in several locations; I look at it and say - no way I'm going to try to capture that one - I simply didn't know what to do.

EXIF says ISO 200, f/8 @ 1/800 and F=103 mm.

With a 30D, I've been using ISO 640 with no problems to get shutter speeds higher to compensate for wind (although that doesn't help much with focus changing with movement of the flower).

The only thing I can think of is to do a cloesup (macro) of the tiny flowerlets.

The other comment I might offer is to re-shoot when the sun is no longer shining directly on the flower and/or background; the reflective highlites tend to decrease the colour saturation. My favourite time for flower work is in a light rain with good overcast.

I have recently added a five in one reflector/diffuser to my arsenal and it seems to really help reducing glare, but if the background is twenty feet away, the diffuser is simply too small to correct that problem too.

I stopped to look at your site - that's a beauty of a shot of the yellow rose (and the Heavenly pink).

A rose very much like your Orange Surprise is blooming at Government House here in Victoria - and I've spent a "few" minutes with it - probably will go again this evening. I wait until the direct sun is off it - shaded by tall trees, then use the reflector to cast some reflected sunshine onto the flower head. Very handy gadget - MultiDisc 5'n'1 by PHOTOFLEX.

When did voluptuous become voluminous?
