I was going to buy a wide angle lens from b&h and it says that this lens only fits on the rebel series bodies and the 20 and 30d. So how do I get one for the 1ds? Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm too stupid for my gear, but that aside....

The EF-S lenses only work with APS-C sensors. The 1DS is a full frame sensor and will only work with EF lenses.

If you want a wide zoom, then look at 17-40 L or maybe 16-35 L or for a short walkabout zoom the 24-70 L or the 24-105 L

Gear List :D

Or if you want really wide angle, the 16-35 f/2.8L MKII or the 17-40 f/4 L.

There actually is a 15 minute mod that might allow the 17-55 to fit a full-frame, at least it does fit a 10D when you are done. Somebody here on the forum took the EFS mount off, and was able to get the 17-55 to fit.

It's' not a mod I'd recommend, because if you don't watch your focal length closely, the rear element of the lens will protrude into the mirror box and the mirror will strike the rear element as it attempts to swing up. The guy that did the mod didn't think it was a big deal, but I can tell you from experience, the mirror is fairly fragile and I'm sure repeated blows like that definitely cause some damage.

If you have a lot of money and don't mind taking a risk....and don't mind only getting a cropped circle on your shots...take a 17-55, a hacksaw and cut the plastic spacer on the back. I think bob atkins tried this with an 18-55 and a 1d-mkII. It's going to be like shooting with a peleng 8mm fisheye in regard to the cropping (a little bigger than the 8mm produces, but probably not by a lot).

...otherwise, 24-70 f/2.8L is a great lens (from what I have heard) and will appear to shoot some 3mm wider (17x1.6 = 27.2.mm). The 24-105 f/4L IS is the closest (though a stop slower) similar lens with IS. I owned a 24-105L, but not a full-frame camera. I have heard some people say the 24-105L is a touch soft on the edges wide open (as was minein the center at 105mm wide open), but I have no 1st hand experience in that setup.

As said for about a million times - you CAN mod it to "fit"

BUT....the 17-55mm is an EF-S lens in more ways than just the mount! The lens was designed with the APS-C sensor in mind - aside from image quality compromises, you will NOT be filling the FULL frame of the 1Ds even AFTER the mod.

Aside from that, the rear element of EF-S lenses are made to be much closer to the sensor - that okay from a cropped sensor body's point of view, but I wouldn'e want to slap my mirror in the 1Ds on the rear element in a 1Ds.

Get the 24-70mm f/2.8L if you want the same focal range (as been said) or get the 16-35mm f/2.8 mk II for ultra-wide angle (as also been said)

cheers,

Lucas
