For fifty bucks, you have all the materials to do it yourself.
And in the time it takes to get into your car, back out of the driveway and drive six blocks, you could have cleaned it yourself.

I've had the Copper Hill cleaning kit for about 2 years, and while the wet cleaning method worked the first few times, lately, I haven't been able to completely clean the sensor edges of all of the dust. Rather than run the risk of ruining the sensor by getting too aggressive with the self cleaning method, it makes sense to take the camera in to Canon for an annual sensor cleaning, particularly if it's a free service.

Jun 26, 2007 11:12 | #37 I took the Metro Link train to Irvine a couple of months ago to get the 5D cleaned. They cleaned sensor, mirror, and viewfinder for free. Bring the body cap w/you, as they won't accept lenses attached to the cam at time of check in. John

Does anyone know what method the service center uses to clean? I've heard that they use Kimwipes with a mixture of alcohol and Windex...I tried using Kimwipes with tweezers as I've read, that made nothing but a mess of my low pass filter. Used the Sensor swabs and it cleaned it all up. "Ne nuntium necare"

It is easy to be consumed by the obsession of the pursuit of a clean sensor. I was just curious, as you stated in your tut, the service centers "probably" uses this method of cleaning. However, according to what I've read, Canon uses Kimwipes dry or use 90% rubbing alcohol or use a mixture of alcohol and Windex. I have the SCK-E1 kit from Japan and it is similar to the Dustaid. Like Dustaid, however, it doesn't removed your caked in gunk, READ: Shutter Oil residue, etc. From what I've read, the Canon service center do an excellent job of cleaning the sensor, I can't imagine the SCK-E1 kit achieving those results, therefore the service center must do something else. I can't speak of the Canon service center, but the shops here in Salt Lake that offer cleaning use this method. Visit my PhotoBlog:

It was filthy after two years of use - lots of black specks on my images at small apetures. I went ahead and got the 5D's sensor cleaned too because it was a little dirty. They're pretty cool cleaning your sensor for free... Canon EOS 20D | EOS 5D | EOS 50E QD | EF 16-35mm f/2.8L | EF 50mm f/1.4
