Hi,
I'm new to digital photography and am really impressed with the quality of the images posted on this site. Being new to digital, I am also unfamiliar with photo editing software. I'm using Elements 5 and have a question re the repair of lens distortion and plain bad tripod leveling.
As you can see on the attached photo, the image is tilted and there is a keystone effect from the 17-85mm lens I was using.
Using Elements, I can correct one of the problems, but that emphasizes the other defect. Correct the second, and the first one comes back.
Any suggestions?

Hi tsamarin and welcome to POTN.

I'm not sure whether there's a perfect solution in PSE but I was able to get something that looked quite acceptable. (At least to my standards, which may be lower than yours!) If you had enabled 'Image Editing OK' in your profile I'd show you, but since you haven't, I'll have to tell you what I did.

1. Activate the 'Distort' tool. (From the menu: Image... Transorm... Distort.)
2. Drag the top left hand corner of the picture around. Dragging it down improves the tilted horizon. Dragging it left straightens up the tower. With the image sized as in your post (700x467 pixels) I found that about 150 pixels down and 25 to the left was about right.
3. Drag the centre of the top edge back to where it started, in order to restore the proportions of the image.
4. There will now be an area of blank canvas at the top left, so use the clone tool to fill it with the dark sky.

Total about 2 minutes work.

Stewart,
Thanks for the help! I appreciate your taking the time to share your knowledge with a total stranger. I will try your technique the minute I have a little free time and also change my profile to enable image editing.
Cheers!

Here's my 2-minute work-up to help you decide whether you think it's worth bothering. (As I said, my standards may be lower than yours.) You should be able to achieve better results if you start with a high-resolution original. Good luck with it.
