D60 to 10D: worth the upgrade ?

Hello guys,

As you can see in my gear list, I've got an "old" D60.
I'd like to know from those of you who own those bodies, if it is worth the upgrade ? I'd like to have opinions from those who upgraded their 10D to a 1DMkII .
What would you recommend to me (10D or mkII), knowing that I'm not a pro.

All joking aside, my guess is you'd be better off that with a 10D and better glass depending on what you've already got.

It depends. If AF performance and a top ISO 1000 aren´t limitations for you, probably you don´t need an upgrade to the 10D. They have basically the same sensor. Regarding the MkII, probably is too much a camera for a non-pro, but if you have the 4 grands to spend, go for it

Here's the questions you need to ask yourself if you are trying to justify a purchase based on need:

Is the D60 doing the job for you? Is there some feature of a 10D that you need for what you are doing and the D60 doesn't have it?

The D60 is still a fine camera. Just because the 10D and the 1D MkII came out does not mean that the D60 won't still do the job.

If, on the other hand you just want to upgrade, then that's justification enough. If you want the 10D or 1D MkII, then you should buy it if you can afford to. If you are anything like me, once you get to the point of asking questions like this, then it's just a matter of time anyway.

What I'd like to upgrade is low light focusing, less noise in higher ISO. When I use AI servo, I'dl like the camera to lock on the subject an keep it in focus. Improve image quality. And sometimes more than 3fps...
I've never played with a 10D. I wonder if they REALLY fixed the low light focusing

Regarding low light AF, I'm accostumed to the very robust EOS 5 AF, and just recently was able to take my DRebel to a trip and shooted in low light situations (as in church interiors) in where the EOS 5 had no trouble. It was like I've never changed the camera The Drebel AF is as good as the EOS 5 one, and I never missed a shot for AF issues, and I wasn´t using the flash as AF assist, even at very low light levels (1/6s f/4 at ISO 1600 shots). The 10D has exactly the same AF system, so I think it will as good as the DRebel one.
But if you want the best AF you can get (mostly in AI servo), and more than 3fps, your only chance is the MkII. And the ISO noise is even lower in the MkII than in the 10D.

As you can see from my signature I am sorta set up like you Mike. And the advice is all good. I agree with G3 and am posting my 2 cents for us both . I keep getting the urge to upgrade too. The 10D does focus faster and seems to improve over the D60, in alot of ways. But I hear the color is nicer on the D60. I am not a pro and non of my considerable expense has earned it's keep in any other way than education and pleasure. I am still ( constantly ) trying to refine my mechanical skills (thanks to histograms and instant gratification ) and I think the D60 is still working wonderfully for that . The 1D mark 2 looks awsome,
(45 hundred not justifyable! for me ). And I would rather wait ( or rather will have to wait ) and see if the next improvement on the 10D grabs me.... smaller crop (bigger sensor), E-TTL II , way better metering than my D60 , white balance and on and on.
Like I said I am posting this to re-enforce me and add my 2 cents to this thread. I keep thinking ...Maybe I could have 2 dslr's

I just recently upgraded to the MKII. I also still own the D60 and 10D. I do recommend upgrading to the 10D, BUT you may want to wait just a little bit longer until Photokina and see if something new is announced there regarding the next-generation 10D.

Anyway, I was glad I got the 10D and do not regret it at all. But, the D60 is a very capable camera, just a bit on the slow side when it comes to dSLRs. However, if you want a 10D, there are some MKII owners selling theris, though not as many as you would have thought. The majority seem to be hanging onto them. That shows what a great camera the 10D really is.

In fact, Jon Borcik has a 10D system for sale on this forum...

I think I'm gonna wait till next Photokina as I still have a working camera.
Though I wonder if I'm gonna get a 10D class camera or jump into the "pro world" with a mkII as I was reading in a french magazine "Chasseur d'Images", they were saying that in the pro market, the models don't change every year. They last two years ( cf : 1D & 1Ds ). So a mkII would be a 2 years investment.

You have forgotten the discontinued model "1D".

I prefer CMOS images to CCD and from 6,3Mpix (D60) to 4,1 Mpix (1D) would be a downgrade even though 1D remains an excellent camera with far better response-time, focus,... than the D60.
