Nah, don't go away,. see the top of that post again.
I think it took "The Cheif" to say what may be on the minds of many.

It deserves, needs to be said. :)

Sorry I brought it up.

Don't be. I took this thread off of my "subscribe" list a long time ago for many of the reasons you mentioned. I only looked in just now because I saw your name as last poster and wondered what you had to say on the matter.

I really don't have anything to contribute. My Mk III works well, but I'm not doing the things many of you are attempting, so I really don't know if I have a good or bad copy. It's good for me.

When (and if) I have anything to contribute that's truly relevant to the discussion, I'll not be bashful about saying it.

I just hope to see some balance to the discussion in the future, and when someone expresses an opinion that's favorable to Canon and/or the Mk III, they won't be drowned out.

BTW, I'm monitoring this thread, and have great empathy for those of you who are having problems. If it takes 3-4 months to sort it all out, that represents a significant portion of the economic life of the camera based on a two-year upgrade cycle.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

Get out from under the rock. In the poll above it has you in the category that you are now experiencing problems after going to 1.1.0 firmware. What problem are you having?

Must be a glitch in the poll (or my fingers). That's not how I voted.:o

Agreed. I'm always a fan of free speech and stating one's opinion, particularly on the internet where things can become a run-away train just as Belmondo describes, but based on CDS's count this thread doesn't appear to be "running away" with a particular opinion good or bad either way. I also think it's important we keep each other informed. I probably would have missed various updates on the Galbraith site and postings in other forums without someone pointing them out, so I definitely appreciate that. If Canon is/does read this thread (and hopefully the other Mk III threads in the Forums) they will read through any over-hyping or trouble making and see the issues that real every-day users are having.

Was this a Naturesacpes Members Camera or is this one of the cameras from FM that had that adjustment?

I hope to here from CanonNJ re: mine on Monday,
but not hearing from them re: my MkIII has not stopped them from so far sending me two requests for feedback on the process!

Thanks, unfortunately "Pops' just signed up to post that, so it may be the same individual that was posting on FM,. was hoping to see a trend growing of repaired units. That would be even better news!

I just saw the most recent from Paul Pope (big time wedding and studio photog)
http://forums.dpreview.com …orum=1032&thread=24329243 (external link)

Yes it's on DPreview, but he's well respected and his team use a lot of Canon cameras.
There up to 4 MkIII's that they feel don't work.

I believe the problem, while real, is being somewhat overblown, and the impatience of a few individuals reflects unfairly on Canon to a great degree, and this forum to a lesser degree. Until we have a definitive word on the problem and the solution, we're just fueling anti-MK III hysteria with the constant droning which really covers no new ground.

I believe the problem is being extremely overblown considering overall improvements and capabilities of Mark III.

BUT

Camera purchase should not be lottery for good or bad copies. What should be done is to get faulty copies to repair, if they come back faulty get them back to repair until they either say nothing is wrong with the AF or fix it. I would consider these people heroes of the day.

Another hero of the day is the one who can show a simple foolproof method of testing a camera with something common like a coke can. Because I simply can not get my camera do what Paul Pope says:

QUOTE Pope (external link)
"camera not being able to "hold" its focus rather then failing to acquire focus as often it was noted the camera click into focus quite quickly and then after a second or so began to "hunt" for focus again. This happened most often on stationary targets and occurred both in one shot and AI servo mode."

(how can "starts to hunt" happen after a second or so in one shot mode?)

My test with focus with ruler and $20 bill was pretty straight forward and had predictable focus error rate for my unit. Can do it with any item just put camera on tripod, one shot focus and use a lens like 135L, 85 1.8 or 24-70 wide open (those were easiest to see for me), focus at target till get confirmation beep and press shutter, defocus lens with mf ring then refocus again and try again. Do this 15 times. If focus shifts back and forth several inches resulting in about half oof shots then you have a bad unit IMHO. Of note I had focus set to back 'af on' button, try that too. I didn't try with the shutter button for af on. It would be a big plus to put a ruler angled beside the item so you can see in the after pics if the focus is shifting a lot or not.

i would like to take back everything i said when i posted from the field this morning. i just did a quick review of the shots from today and i don't even know what to say anymore. for some weird reason, i had no problem with AI Servo today but most of my one-shot shots came out like crap. looking at the images with zoombrowser, i found out something very interesting. i was shooting one-shot with center point selected and no expansion turned on and for some weird reason, half of my shots don't even have a red square lit up even though i know 100% that i had focus spot on at the moment and the center AF point right on target. nowm while i go into the shower, i will leave you with a little game called "where's the focus?". there is no prize invloved btw...

Snir, that looks/sounds very similar to the results I was getting last weekend and before the firmware upgrade. I don't think I ever had no focus point, but I was (and typically do) shoot center point focus both with and without expansion.
