YEP i did the car test as soon as i got my mk3 40mph coming towards me 2 shots slightley out of focus out of aprox 25 then a car going away at the same speed and aprox the same results .
So i was convinced my mk3 was ok .
Now a jet does travel faster than 40mph however as im panning the jets speed in relation to the camera/lens is or should be almost nill and the camera should not have a big problem But it does.
Rob.

Okay, good, I'm glad to hear you did the test. In that case everything boils down to expectations. IMO your keeper rate should have been 100 percent PERIOD; like I said in my post above that is what I'm used to getting (and please don't take this as a slam on your equipment and/or judgment).

You are one of the few folks that has actually done the test, provided results, and therefore it is easy for me to calibrate your statements based on actual test results that you have provided.

I'd like to thank you for your valuable feedback.

Regards,

Unless too much gain is part of the problem (i.e. the f/2.8 should create a "stronger" AF signal).

That's exactly why I've taken comparison shots - same lens, same subject, same conditions, same settings (as much as possible) as well as shooting before and after micro-calibration.

The 100-400 is sharp at 400 but the MF adjustment "sometimes" doesn't have enough resolution to really nail perfect focus; you could be perfect at 400mm but have the problem at 380mm or 390mm, you are simply at the mercy of gear resolution. With a USM lens the AF enjoys very high resolution and can drive the lens to perfect focus "if" both the camera and lens are properly calibrated. Most folks that test resolution will automatically use MF to eliminate AF variables; in the case of the 100-400 MF may never allow you to get to perfect focus. I'm not sure what Canon could do about the MF resolution limitation; if they increased the resolution of the MF adjustment it would take a longer time to adjust the lens and then folks would complain it takes forever to adjust the focus (live is full of tradeoffs, sure glad I don't make cameras).

Anyway, here (picture below) is what my 100-400 does using MF or AF; you can see the AF is the sharpest of the two. OBTW, I was using the Angle Finder C to support the MF adjustment and could clearly see in the viewfinder that it wasn't possible to smoothly go through focus (I mean MF got me close to perfect focus but no cigar).

Thanks for that Joe. I guess the MF adjustment isn't really up to snuff and all these lenses work fine for me on my 5D.

Yes, something like that except I would have use the family car to eliminate variables to the greatest extent possible. I saw your test quite some time ago and remember feeling sorry for your bad luck with the new camera. I hope your problem was resolved to your satisfaction (e.g. you got a full refund).

Yes, but that section of the road affords a direct shot and there is a stop sign another 500 feet up so the speeds are pretty consistent. The color of the car, sun versus shade, in-state plates vs out-of-state plates, speed, color of may shirt, all add a bit to the variables, but it is a camera that should not be affected by such things.

All turned out as expected, my dealer handled this with a level of professionalism I would have never gotten locally.....( KEH out of Atlanta is top flight...none better...beats B&H on service and matches prices...shameless plug...sorry)

Apparently my CD & camera were sent to Japan via their Canon Rep.....They didn't want my shirt & shorts however :p

KEH matches prices? That's good to know, I've always liked 'em. Didn't see any price-matching statement in their catalogs, though. Just ask?

Anyone heard any updates on the results of the 1.1.1 firmware? Anything else on the rumor about finding a fix and/or shipments on hold to dealers?

I continue to wait for my body, ordered in my local Ritz store on 7/27. Any information has to be funneled through my salesman, since the number is for employees not end customers. Two weeks ago, I squeezed him for info, and he got a good rep on the phone: "you're #30, we have 100 on order, we're expecting a shipment by the end of August". Of course, no idea whether they're expecting 29 cameras, 100 cameras, or more. Tuesday, I squeezed again, and I'm still #30 with about 80 people on the list. As of today, still no automated email to indicate that it's shipped.

he said the shots were Crap and the mk3 should have easly got them in sharp focus with ease -on one set of 15 continue's shots it took 11 befor it got the jet in focus and it was well big enough when i first picked it up .
