Considering the additional challenge of shooting with the 2.0X TC, I think her results were pretty good. Also, it was a Kenko TC, and not the Canon.

Agreed. There was no reason to bring up the possible focus flaw in the Osprey thread. It is NOT an example of the problem being reported.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "it is not" any more than I would say "it is",. it's just not useful data is all as there are too many other factors.
Impressive shots with that 2X indeed, and I would not expect better results from a Mk2.

Is anybody into model trains? I would think that if somebody had access to a model train setup, complete with buildings, trees, people, etc. you could really set up a great test scenario over and over again, trying out different lighting and custom functions. It would be one of the most consistent tests that could be run, train coming at you, train passing you, etc. Just a silly thought that came to mind as I am trying to digest the facts vs opinions in this thread. Mirroring real-world DOF might be problematic though.

just to clear it up on my comments to Perm on that Osprey thread. i never said that it was the issue 100% but i do think that something was off due to the background being in focus in some shots and than the bird was in focus in other shots. i was under the impression that she shot this in sequence which means just using the 10fps and if that is the case, i don't see why 6 shots would be OOF while 2 would be in perfect focus in the same sequence. what i meant to say by telling her that it was a perfect example was the conditions of the shots: the bird is small in the frame with busy background.

One thing for certain, switching from AI servo priority to active focus point priority was a step forward, other than that I am still lost at sea.

Just to be sure I am on the same page following your step forward, to which Cf are you referring, and what was its setting by default and what did you switch it to? Thanks in advance...

Greetings to all.

Long time lurker, first time posting ( well first time for a long while!!).

I got a call from RGB (UK) this morning saying that they were expecting 2 on Thursday and one of them is mine. So I should get it very soon. (I got the feeling the other was also spoken for). That is of course presuming Canon do actually send them out.

Simon

Congrats, welcome back. It is a truly awesome camera, you'll love it.

Over at Dpreview there is a post from someone who says he figured out the proper settings that totally eliminates any AF issues. He swears it is user error in reading and applying the AF functions. I lost the link from where I read it last night and will look again. The guy swears he is correct and that this is a total non-issue. I just don't know, but it made interesting reading. It would be too cool to find out that is all that this is about, folks using the wrong settings.

Edited to add:

Ohh I think I read that too. It was a member that do NOT own the camera and have never owned a 1 series camera ever. And he refers to the videos in masterclass made by Canon.

Some people has complained about focus issues with the Mk III is starting to receive E-Mails from Canon:

"Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

We are currently investigating the Internet reports regarding focus concerns. If you feel that your EOS-1D Mark III is exhibiting difficulties regarding focus tracking of moving or static subjects as the Rob Galbraith article suggests, we request some information from you to better help us assess the situation. We request that, if possible, you send us a sample sequence of images that display the problem you are experiencing, burned to a CD. Any updates to our investigation will be
published on the Canon USA web site www.usa.canon.com).

Since this concern is still under investigation, we do not suggest sending the camera in for service as little can be done until clarification is received from Canon, Inc. in Japan. "

This is good to see. I received a response from Canon Care Center today stating to send my camera to the Service Center (See below). I have been wondering if I should send it in not or wait until I here they have a fix or at least admit they have a problem. I have received a UPS label from them to send it in but I do not want to send it and then have to send it in again in a few weeks or months once they find a solution. I know those of us that have had problems are praying for an easy solution but it may not be as simple as a firmware upgrade since it is not happening to everyone. IMO

My MKIII works O.K not great and not as good as my MKIIn in the AF arena but I love a lot of the other features. I am getting ready to go on vacation for a couple of weeks maybe I will send it in then and see what happens.

"Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you with your EOS 1D
Mark III.
Please note, we here at the Care Center do not have the opportunity or
authority to make warranty decisions. We understand your disappointment in encountering this issue with your camera, but you will need to
address your concerns with the Factory Service Center. They are the
only entity within Canon USA authorized to make warranty decisions.
We suggest mailing your camera to them, along with a detailed letter
explaining your situation, just as you have done in your correspondence
with us here at the Care Center.
The Factory Service Center personnel will assess your camera and read
your letter.
Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your EOS
1D Mark III.
Thank you for choosing Canon.
Sincerely,
Chris

Yeah, I noticed that also. He makes a compelling argument. I haven't done bif to any extent. It will be interesting to see if those who own the M3 and have the issue, will try these settings and see if they work for them. It is obvious that there is something there that is disturbing the bif experts, at least some of them have an issue. Seems like the entire issue was getting blown out of proportion, especially by a few who were on the sidelines determining the camera's worth. Appears also that Canon's business plan does not include candor with their customers. Maybe it is a good strategy for them, but with the instant communications between thousands of consumers, it is not as easy as the old days to ignore issues like this as concern grows. Personally, I think Canon's business strategy is outdated and needs reviewed in light of Forums like this. As long as there are still waiting lists for this camera, and other product releases, I guess Canon isn't all too motivated to make this kind of change.

Seems like they don't take these issues seriously until they appear in print, like in camera magazines. I am just speculating though.

CFn III-4 set to "0" Main Focus Point" is default.
I had been using it set to "1 Continuous AF Track Priority" and this was giving poor results.

Thanks.

If it does arrive this week, I will be out all weekend testing. Of course living in Scotland I suspect the temperature is unlikely to reach the heights mentioned in Rob Galbraith's review. :) I use servo mode often but mostly panning, rarely for subjects heading at me. All the same, it would be nice to get some sort of definitive answer.

I just saw this over at FM

...as I'm depressing the * button pointing the camera around the store on different subjects the focusing is responding albeit a little slow. I decided to set CF IV - 2 back to the default setting and again start to point the camera around, but this time with the AF-ON button the AI Servo was reponding much quicker in snapping new targets into focus. I thought I was losing it. I called the guy I usually deal with over and set the camera both ways without saying anything as to why. He looked at me and said why is it faster the 2nd way. The lens was a Canon 75-300 non IS. NO speed demon in its own right. It was more responsive with the AF-ON button. So please test and see what you get. Thanks C.J.

has anyone tested this out to see if it's different with their cameras (and if it helps the AF?)? I haven't as of yet...(and I automatically switched from the AF button to the * for AF)

I decided to leave the focus on the AF button, to make an effort of getting used to it before dismissing it,.

I don't like the placement of the AF button on the main grip, it's little awkward, but I love the placement on the portrait grip  Isn't that pisser!

me too! Everytime I switch to portrait, I accidentally use the AF button...it's just placed better. But I still like it on the * button on the main grip...so I've left it switched.

I don't want to get this thread going on the same subject, and I was about move all this to the AF thread, but this guys post and info is all wrong and is clearly the words of someone with little to know understanding both of the camera itself, how it works, and what the issue is that some of us are having.
Though there may be some that are experiencing issues that these settings will fix, it's not all of them and it's certainly not the experienced MkII users.
