Man oh man....MD Jakoff and AirSmitten would make even the FM Forum's Canon fanboys blush......all that rupturous effusion of love for a stinkin' camera.
Get a grip boys. Give me some BIF shots that I could not make with my trusty 20D.

To own it is to love it, sonny.

Very cool Lisa!

So I have yet to try any extensive tests with the AI servo set above the default "medium" .. but my worst problems were when it was set to "slow" .. I think I see a pattern!

Jake: Over the weekend I did a little AI test when I saw a kid next door on a trampoline while I was trying (feebily) to shoot some little freaking bird on the bird feeder. The kid was watching me as he popped up and down behind the fence. I thought: Perfect!

Had the servo speed set to normal and tried shooting him as he popped up. Every shot was blurry. Kicked the speed to fast and then every shot was sharp as a needle. I tracked him up and down even as he dropped behind the stationary fence. I have mine set to single point with expansion, like I have always had set with the MKII.

I, also, am seeing a pattern. Your BIF shots getting any better?

As long as I kept the point on the bike no problems at all, if I wondered of the af tried to refocus on the BG which I would expect. I did try a fellow photogs MKII and had similar results although the MKII was a little slower acquiring focus.

Good shootin', good observations.
The speed of focus acquisition of MkIII relative to MkII you have reported is consistent not only with the Canon's design intent, the way I understand it, but also with the experiences of other action photographers.

What I'd like know is if you selected the center AF point expansion for those bike shots.

Nick: Sahweet! :) That's also my experience with the two cameras side-by-side.

settings updates: I tried the last settings I listed with hummingbirds.....busy background and my first ever hummingbird shoot...thus far I'm really liking the CF 3:5 on fast. I don't think I could have captured this without it. I had the focus search to off with this as well. The new thing is that I've been switching back and forth btw. center AF point and the ring of fire...both of them work really well in different settings...but the ring of fire tracks really well (on not a busy background) in aiservo. Oh, and the ring of fire worked great with fireworks too :)

MKIII aiservo AV 300mm f4 1/500

I love those! Ring of fire? The inside or outside points? Not sure, as I've had not heard that before. Thanks.

Good to hear,..
I've actually gotten some real sweet shots with it, but not in the percentages I am used to with the MkII yet, so I have not felt these were "representative" of the shots I'm getting.

When I went shooting with Blonde a week ago, I got some very good shots of some least terns in flight. These little guys are no bigger than a swallow (perhaps a little more lean) and nearly as fast.

I'll be trying it all again with the fast AI setting this weekend for sure.

"Ring of Fire" = Let Camera select from all 45 AF points,.
It was not the best option on MkII, works very well on Mk3

A friend of mine sent his mk3 in for error 99 issue they overnighted a new body to him. NJ service center said they do not have parts to fix the mk3 so they are just replacing them with new ones.

bannedPermanent ban

well, it's no longer a rumor. i called the shop were i purchased the camera and they directed me to call Canon USA which i did. I spoke to "Zack". he confirmed that there is an ongoing investigation and they are very much aware of the "problem" as he put it. at this point, they are in the information gathering stage. he also stated that they are very aware of the Galbreth (spell) test and take this issue very serious. for those who call in, they will send a call tag for you to send in a disk of your images in question for their investigation.

he said they are not yet sure what action will be taken until they have gathered more evidence of the problem.

so...if you have a perceived problem, i suggest you contact Canon and get on their list. the sooner the more info they have, the quicker the issue will be addressed.
