not sure if this has been posted before but i just found it on another forum and found it to be a great read:

http://www.prophotohome.com …s-interactive-review.html (external link)

If he chose only one AF point for AI Servo, it means that the camera will not use any other real AF points for tracking. That means you seriously cripple prediction capabilities by limiting tools the camera can use for calculation.

Also, the "dog test": when a photographer just points the camera somewhere and expects the camera to make intelligent decisions where to focus (the eye) you do not get results you expected. I get rock steady results with one shot AF, it focuses exactly where I tell it to.

I'm sure there are improvements coming to AF firmware, but these tests show more ability to find out what does not work than ability to find out what settings work best for the situation.

Yes, but it's telling that the 1DII had no problems with the single AF point, while the 1DIII did, don't you think?

True, but I think it's important to find out what doesn't work in order to either prevent such situations from occurring or to know how to work around them if they do occur. When there is still widespread doubt that there is a systemic problem at hand, that much needs to be established/disproved before we can proceed to finding a solution.

Apologies if this is a dup post, but here's a pro's view, and IMO a solid, informed opinion:

IMHO the only images in that Arthur Morris series that illustrates to me any kind of particular capabilities of the MkIII or even advanced skill ( artistic merit not taken into account, that black headed gull is a fantastic image!) are the tern and puffin, both of which are fast little flyers.. and difficult to get good BIF shots of.

I expect my 20D to have zero issues in capable hands tracking a white Gannet with a 6.5 foot wingspan against blue ocean background. (in fact I have hundreds of such shots taken with a 10D with a zoom attached 3 years ago )

(actually I can't from memory recall if these samples are 10D or MkII but I know some are)

And there's a good reason that we shoot gulls for BIF practice, they are excellent and easy targets.
Not to detract from Arthur's statements, I think they are accurate, but again we are talking about a different scale. His subject was so close and filled the screen so much that he could not fit the wingspan in the frame.

Thanks Lisa,.
These too are gannets like the last images in the Arthur Morris article.
One of my all time favorite birds,. they are wicked fishers.. diving from heights as high as 300 feet head first deep into the ocean.

http://newfoundland.fotopic.net/c402761.html (external link) <--- ( a series taken from much too far away to be art, but cool even so)

If you get a chance, check out the BBC/Discovery channel series "Planet Earth"
In one episode, they show a capelin feeding frenzy off the coast of South Africa where they have underwater shots of the Gannetts at the end of there dive,.something I've never seen elsewhere. It's stunning.

...posting them here was not only to illustrate a point, but I admit that against my own better judgment, I was hoping people might stop assuming that I don't know how to use the camera if I showed that I can actually take pics of BIF :) :) :)

I know what your thinking,.. "dreamer get your head out of the clouds.. "

once canon confirms a problem, and they will, i plan to have a BBQ at my house for all of the people who continue to tell me that because there is no problem with their camera, there is no problem with my camera. it must be the operator.

the menu will consist of one item: Crow....how would you like yours cooked?

Since I don't have a 1D3 yet, can I bring my own steak? :)
