Saving only in RAW

Does anyone know if the camera can be programmed just to save in RAW and not RAW plus JPEG?

It seems like a waste to have JPEG embedded with the RAW file as it takes valuable memory. I noticed with a 1 GB card the D10 will save about 150 on RAW+jpeg and the digital Rebel around 110. I might have not had the settings of JPEG fine/nl/superfine exactly right because I was confused of this feature.

Why would they make the camera also save a JPEG when RAW is superior and you can convert later if you like?

maybe for ease of use, you can just send the jpeg via email and not have to convert it. I think they should give you more options too though.

On my old D60, the only save options are for some JPEGs and then RAW. There is no RAW+JPEG, so I guess I won't complain.

No you cannot shoot raw only on the 10D, but if you choose the smallest JPG setting, you're only using about 400k per JPG.

No, because then you would not be able to see anything of your picture while in the camera / in Zoombrowser / in Breezebrowser.

Every camera that stores RAW actually stores RAW+JPG ... the difference is that the 10D allows you to store a very large JPG with your RAW.

Reduce the size of your JPG, then you should get more shots.

Interesting sidebar here: With the MKII you can select RAW only as you can with the other 1-series cams. However, taking the RAW file into BreezeBrowser and you can still a extract JPEG file out of the RAW. It's about 1/3 the size of its 8.2mp big brother.

Dang...it's right there in the manual and I missed it. Thanks Jim, I was starting to think I need a 2 gb card 'cause 70 shots per card just isn't enough on my 1 gb cards (well plus the additional ~35 on the 512 SD).

Heheh...yeah well, I think it's going to take 6-12 months to find out all this camera will do. About the time you think you have it figured out, there's something else to learn.

And just when you get it all down pat a newer better camera to get on the waiting list...

... AND then it's time to upgrade the digital body

It'd take one hell of a camera to have me upgrading anytime soon. I don't see that happening in the near future, but I also never say never.
