I like this forum a lot, and I really like Canon products better than other brands, but why not make it a "photography forum" instead of a "canon photography forum." There are plenty of good photographers who use Nikons and Sonys. It's not so much the equipment, but how it is creatively used. My 2 cents.

There are also plenty of general photography forums out there. This one has an emphasis on Canon equipment - that's what distinguishes it from the rest. If you want good advice on Canon gear this is the place to come.

If users of other Camera brands want to share their photos and expertise in the non-equipment related sections they are always welcomed to this forum.

and I'm so glad this is a Canon forum! There are other forums out there that deal with the rest of the field!

I see. In my opinion, it's one of the best general photography forums, if not the best.

I like it just as it is. POTN is primarily a Canon forum, but one where no-one gets upset if members post shots taken with other equipment. It's the best place I've found to discuss photography... or virtually anything else, but it does help if you have a sense of humour!

I definitely think this forum is the best I've ever seen, no doubt!

Go take a look at DPreview...if that's what a one-for-all forum is then you can keep it.

This place has its moments but 99% of the time it's very friendly. :)

In my experience, forums that are more open to equipment talks concerning a broader range of brands (i.e. more than one) tend to become havens for fanboys. In fact, almost every thread would probably degrade into a battle of one fellow's brand loyalty vs. another's, and that doesn't make for great camera talk as far as I'm concerned.

What? Like the "Filter/non-filter", "To L or not to L", "RAW vs. JPEG" or "IS or not" threads here? Nah. Never happen!

Did you go over to www.Nikonians.org (external link) and ask why theirs is dedicated to just Nikon? If so, please post their responses. I'm rather curious. Please do the same over on www.pentaxforums.com (external link) (Pentax) and www.dynaxdigital.com (external link) (Minolta).

dpreview.com, fredmiranda.com, dcresource.com and many other websites have general photography forums. Heck even ebay has one.

This one happens to be dedicated to Canon, and it works. But as mentioned previously, you don't HAVE to own a Canon product to be a member and post here. Unlike Nikonians.org though - they require you to own or intend to own a Nikon product of some sort, else you get booted.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

I love the fact that this forum is mostly Canon geared. Had it not been, I probably wouldn't have stuck around. It is just so much easier finding info and advice directly related to my equipment. And most everyone know what your talking about. Every night we should all get down on our knees and thank the photo gods that Pekka is a Canonite. :)

I like this place too much. Because we use Canon gear, I feel like we speak the same language and the fact that most of us love our stuff is funny. I don't think anyone else I know outside this forum is as attached and passionate about photography as I am.

For example: I get together with Jon and I'd say, "Did you see the update on the 16-35?" Jon, "Yeah, and how about the new Mark III?" Me, "I heard it can take 10fps and has the live LCD." . . . .

No one else cares or wants to care about those things around my house. So the fact that POTN is all about Canons makes me very happy.

Check out http://www.dgrin.com/ (external link). I just recently joined. It has a Smugmug support section, which is the reason I looked into it. I lurked a while before joining and it seems a lot like this forum (as in a lot of good advice with a minimum of flaming) but is not equipment centric.

Well, i'd say that's a lot better than in-body v. in-lens IS, 'The build of the Alpha is superior to that of any competing bodies,' and so on.

At any rate, I don't think being Canon only makes the equip. talk sections any worse.

Funny you should mention that . . .
