I am still seriously scratching my head trying to work out how to have the folders in LR and on my HD mirror each other, what with folders that LR had imported with 'imported on date' folders that oit has created itself but which contain no photos and at the same time trying to create a system that somehow allows me to enter files into .psd or tiff or jpg or Raw folders in a subject hierarchy and additioannlay allowing for a back up system without alienating those files from the subject hierarchy

No where near it yet, I don't find LR particularily easy to organise I have to say

e.g.the finder (Mac) or Bridge are 100% easier:(

Personally, I find the LR standard hierarchy works well:

Year
-Month
--Day

I then add:

---Negatives (for the RAWs)
---Edit (for the final image, once exported from LR and PS'd)

Hi , I agree that the year-month-day hierarchy is OK, I mean somerthing else - buit am obviously not very good at explaining

I am talking about the difference between organising files in say Bridge or in the Finder(Mac), There. if you need to create a heierarhy it is very simple, I am getting to see that it can be done in LR but it is NOT simple

EDIT: can you show a screenshot of what you mean by adding --negatives & 'Edit'? thanks

Make sure you've got the Import dialog set to 'Reference in Existing Location' to avoid the moving on the hard drive message. That way it won't move the images, just shows them in LR.

Ive done that and also unchecked the 'back up to' button as I now realise it was duplicating every file

All thesame today I have had to dlete all the folders I had in LR and am starting again, as I was just getting too confused

I knowit is probably entirely my fault but it does underline for me how unintuitive LR is, it feels like , even thouigh I have my head round PSHP and Bridge, the expectation is that users have the ability to get on board easily with whatever new system for doing things is thrown at them, and Im sure most of the 'computer generation' do, but whether it's because Im 54 ( presumably not as Micheal Reichmann has to be at least that;)) or that Im just not a lateral or vertical thinking kinda guy ( whichever is apprpriate) I am having a hard time of it

I bought LR because I am a photographer, I do want LR t work for me, I can see its potential for me, and I do understand the differenc between LR and Photoshop/Bridge; but still - I am struggling.

~If I can't get comfortable wit LR before it next major upgrade I can't envision me staying with it.

I am starting to ask was LR made for me or just those clever types, i.e. is it just over my head?

I think it may just be in your head... lol! :D

It seems intuitive to me, when you import it suggests a hierarchy for you, just use that one and it'll organise it for you. As long as you dont mess about with the folder hierarchy outside of LR then it'll be fine, and you'll get used to how it works.

I've attached a screenshot.

I import my RAW's into the 'negative' folder. Edit them, then export, then take the JPEG into PS, edit it, then save it to an 'EDIT' folder, then import that folder back into LR (you dont have to import it back into LR, but I do as I view all my photos in LR now and don't use anything else to view them)

I am slowly getting the hang of it - I gues I shall have to buy the book as it's too trial and error at the mo even with the various vids out there etc

I just find it confusing e.g. it took me a while to reealise you have to click OFF folders altogether THEN back on it to get the plus button to allow you to add a folder

More stuff like that really, little quirks that baffle me

one thing:
LR keeps running really slowly every now and then, like i have just imported loads of images and it has finished (AFAICS) and then I look at the various menu optionms but the windows open slowly and close slowly and the program is unresponsive for a bit - then it comes OK afteer a while

what's goijg on ???

Give it chance after importing, as it may be doing stuff in the background, like rendering previews.

Try going into the menu and 'optimizing' the catalog.
