Dunno what the limit is. Many. Professional wedding photographer, solution architect and general technical guy with multiple Amazon Web Services certifications.

When I first open that folder I walk away from the computer for a few minutes (literally that is all it takes) and then working within that folder doesn't show significant signs of slowing down. This is dependant on your computer though. I have a new dual core machine with 4GB of RAM. My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

More info | IF you plan to work on lots of images you should set up your cache to use Ditributed Cache Files and not Centralized Cache Files. This will speed things up a little.
