Is there anywhere I can read up on tiffs and adjustment layers and channel masks? I just got my coffee and will start reading the Ron Bigelow article. Thanks.

Hehe! Don't fret! These things come with time. Eventually you will find that you need to use one or more of these tools. Ron does a great job explaining the need for the tools and how to use them.

Seems hard, but once you use them a bit, you'll wonder why more people don't know about them?
One thing you'll notice is that an Adjustment Layer (AL) affects ALL layers beneath it. You can avoid that by Grouping (locking) the AL only to the layer below it by Alt-clicking between the AL & the layer below it. You'll see a little down arrow in the AL after you do that.
A Group can be unlocked (guess what!) by Alt-clicking between the layers again.

A Channel Mask is just a way to save a selection.
Select something.
At the bottom of the Chanel's Palette, click on "Save selection as channel".
Done!
Notice that an Adjustment Layer saves it's "mask" there, too.
