I'm starting to run into a dilemma: I have off-lined so many pictures that I am forgetting what I have.

I really need a way to organize both photos on my computer, and those I have written to CD/DVD. Is there an easy way to add search tags to raw files, or would I be better cataloguing them in a spreadsheet?

Actually, given how good it is at the other stuff, tagging and catalogueing is a real let down in LR compared even to PSE.... but hopefully they will improve things soon.

Not really. Your best bet would be to use external hard drives and not CDs/DVDs (which you shouldn't be using for long term archiving anyway). You could then setup all your keywords and metadata and Lightroom (LR) would know about those shots but they would appear in red in the folders section of LR until you plugged in that drive and told LR where the images reside. This is one of the features that pros like about LR.

There are a few programs that will work with offline images. I use IMatch, and it's pretty good. It creates a thumbnail for any photo you take offline so you can see them even if the DVD isn't in the drive.

Yep. I got IMatch too.

And I see absolutely no reason not to use CD/DVD for long term backup as long as they are tested and duplicated from time to time.
