S3 auto focus delay with flash on

I rarely use flash as I tend to not get the results I want... in the efforts of trying to get better with flash, I am coming across an issue, I wonder if someone can help.
When shooting indoors on Program (most common mode for my quick shots), I tend to have to wait up to 3-4 seconds for the auto focus. With no flash, it is as soon as I depress the shutter release half way. Often, I loose the shot by the time it focuses. What is up with that?!

I'm not sure but is it the time for the flash to charge? BTW P is a great mode to play around in especially to change EV quickly.

I'd go along with that possibility as well. Another thing that may make a difference is using or not using Red-eye reduction.

I don't use red eye reduction.
Seems to me a bit odd that it takes that long.
